Number of Attempts in SSC CGL

How Many Attempts are Permitted for the SSC CGL Examination?

The SSC CGL is one of the reputed examinations in India. You can be appointed in prestigious government departments as an officer by cracking it. Currently, there is no restriction on the number of times one can attempt the SSC CGL Examination.

The significant criteria, however, are the SSC CGL age limit and the educational standards. This age limit and academic criteria depend upon the candidate and whether they belong to the general or protected categories. Essentially, candidates who belong to reserved categories like OBC, SC, and ST are provided with certain relaxations regarding the upper age limit. Thus, the number of attempts in this case differs.

For specific posts, the Commission has specified a certain age limit. However, as determined by the SSC CGL notification, applicants must be 18. The highest age allowed is 32 years. The following table shows a specific age limit prescribed by different departments.

Departments SSC CGL Age Limits Posts
CSS 20-30 years Assistant Section Officer
Intelligence Bureau Not exceeding 30 years Assistant Section Officer
Directorate of Enforcement, Department of Revenue Below 30 years Assistant Enforcement Officer
M/o of Statistics and Program Implementation Below 32 years Junior Statistical Officer
NIA Till 30 years Sub Inspector
CBI 20-30 Sub Inspector
Narcotics 18-25 Sub Inspector
CBEC 20-27 Tax Assistant
Other Departments 18-27 All other posts

SSC CGL Age Relaxation

As mentioned, SSC CGL gives certain relaxations to candidates in the reserved category, who do not meet the age limits above. As per the OBC category, the age relaxation is for three years. For SC/ST, it is five years.

On the other hand, if a person is physically disabled, the relaxation is for ten years. For people who belong to physically handicapped+ OBC and physically handicapped + SC/ST, it is for 13 years and 15 years, respectively. Thus, as per rough calculation, the maximum number of attempts a general candidate can make is around 11. It is because the exam happens only once a year. Thus, one can start at 18 and keep attempting until they are 30. It is generally 11-15 attempts for people in the reserved category.
