Front and medial side of Thigh, Medial compartment of thigh

Front and medial side of thigh compartments have strongest muscles with their neurovasculature. All the medial thigh muscles are innervated by the obturator nerve, which arises from the lumbar plexus. Arterial supply is through the obturator artery. Read the article to know more.

Front and medial side of Thigh, Medial compartment of thigh

The thigh is the part of lower limb located between the hip and the knee. It can be divided into anterior, medial and posterior compartments that surround the femur. These compartments are formed by the inter muscular septa that originates on the inner surface of fascia lata and attach to the linea aspera of the femur

Anterior compartment of thigh or extensor compartment

Anterior compartment includes the anterior thigh muscles which and extension as action on knee joint and flexion on hip joint. The flexors of hip include the pectineus, iliopsoas, sartorius. Extensors at knee joint is Quadriceps femoris. Quadriceps is a four group of muscles namely vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, vastus intermedius and rectus femoris. They connect to the patella via the quadriceps tendon which then extend to insert at the tuberosity of tibia. It receives innervation by Femoral Nerve. Sartorius originate from the ASIS and insert at the superior, medial surface of tibia and is innervated by femoral nerve.

Medial compartment of thigh or adductor compartment

There are five muscles in the group; gracilis, obturator externus, adductor brevis, adductor longus and adductor magnus . All the medial thigh muscles are innervated by the Obturator nerve which arises from the lumbar plexus. Adductor Magnus is the largest muscle in the medial compartment of thigh. It is comprised of two parts- an adductor component and a hamstring component. These muscles originate from pelvis and attach on the femur. Gracilis is the most superficial and medial of the muscles. It  crosses at both hip and knee joint. It leads to adduction of thigh at the hip and flexion of the leg at the knee.

Front and medial side of Thigh FAQs

What form the borders of femoral triangle?

Superior border is formed by inguinal ligament, lateral border is formed by sartorius and medial border is formed by adductor longus.

What is femoral hernia?

In femoral hernia part of bowel pushes into the femoral canal, underneath the inguinal ligament manifesting as a lump or bulge in the area of the femoral triangle.

What are the contents of femoral triangle.

The word NAVEL is used as a mnemonic to orientate the contents of the femoral triangle from lateral to medial N - Femoral Nerve A - Femoral Artery V - Femoral Vein E- Femoral Canal. L - Lymphatics.

What forms the femoral sheath?

The femoral sheath is continuous with the transversalis fascia of the abdomen and the inguinal ligament; it encases the vessels as they pass through the femoral triangle.
