What is the full form of BCG? The BCG full form is Bacillus Calmette Guerin. It is a vaccine against tuberculosis. It helps build resistance to tuberculosis. This vaccine was invented by two French bacteriologists, Albert Calmette and Camille Guérin. Dr Weilhale first used it in 1921 to treat children with tuberculosis. Over the next three years until 1924, around 320 babies were vaccinated against BCG. Vaccines are given to children and the elderly. Risk of developing tuberculosis, such as individuals living in parts of the world infected with tuberculosis or children with one or more parents born in a country infected or affected by tuberculosis. It is also given to patients with bladder tumours or bladder cancer.

About BCG and How does BCG perform?

1.Vaccination is a weakened strain of Mycobacterium Bovis, one of the causative agents of tuberculosis.

2.When the vaccine is given to the body, it reacts to bacteria and activates the immune system without causing infection.

3.The antibodies stay in the body and prevent other bacteria from contracting future diseases.

4.Therefore, vaccination allows our body to develop antibodies against TB bacteria which confer immunity against tuberculosis.

Care and Safety

1.Vaccination should be done after consulting a doctor.

2.Keep the vaccination area clean and dry for about 24 hours.

3.If the vaccine area begins to ooze, use a dry bandage that contains gauze.

4.If desired, a sterile alcohol swab can be used to clean the area.

5.Do not use ointments, dressings, antiseptic creams, etc.

2.If a person has HIV

3.Good results for Mantoux

4.Immunity is weakened due to an underlying disease

4.Tell your doctor if you have an immune disorder, cancer, fever, infection, or a badly burned area on your body.

5.Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. If you become pregnant while receiving the BCG vaccine, contact your doctor immediately.
