The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced that the UPSC ESE Mains 2026 exam date is June 21, 2026. Shortlisted candidates in the prelims will appear for the mains exam as per the schedule. Candidates should follow a checklist carrying the relevant documents to the test centre. The documents include the UPSC ESE Mains Admit Card, Photo ID, Photograph, and other required documents at the centre. Reach the centre 30 minutes before completing entry-related formalities and avoid unwanted delays.
Candidates need to carry the required documents to the examination centre and arrive 30 minutes before the reporting time. It can help the candidates to locate the centre and complete the security check procedure.
The examination hall gates close 30 minutes before the exam start time for security checks. Therefore, candidates must enter the gate at least 30 minutes before the examination begins. Late arrival can negatively impact your mental state.
For a 9:00 AM paper, aim to enter by 8:30 AM.
For a 2:30 PM paper, aim to enter by 2:00 PM.
The ideal arrival window is one hour before the exam start time. This allows relaxation and accounts for unforeseen circumstances like traffic or document issues. Arriving an hour early (e.g., 8:00 AM for a 9:00 AM paper) provides a buffer for document checks, OMR verification, and biometric checks.
Conduct a pre-exam venue survey. Visit the examination centre two to three days before the exam, especially if unfamiliar with the area. This helps understand the exact location and commute, preventing last-minute stress. Do not be complacent about this step.
E-Admit Card: The E-Admit Card printout on clear A4 paper is mandatory. Ensure all details are readable. A colour printout is recommended for a clear photograph.
Official Photo ID Card: Carry an Official Photo ID Card in hard copy. Digital e-Aadhar on your phone is not acceptable. Aadhar Card or Voter ID Card is preferred.
Emergency Photograph Rule: If your photograph on the E-Admit Card is blurry or mismatched, you may need to provide two latest passport-sized photographs by signing an undertaking. It's wise to carry them if you anticipate such an issue.
Permitted Civil Engineering Toolkit (Applicable to all engineering disciplines):
A non-programmable calculator (e.g., 991 MS and 991 ES Plus) is permitted. Avoid the 'EX' model, as it is programmable and usually not allowed.
A scale is useful and should definitely be carried.
Transparent Writing Board: A transparent writing board is extremely important for a smooth and stable surface when writing. Ensure it is transparent, as opaque boards are often rejected.
Pockets & Wallet Check: Ensure no letters, notes, or any unauthorised material are in your pockets or wallet. Remove visiting cards or scribbled items. Carrying such items, even for revision, can lead to a complete ban. Be extremely cautious.
Programmable calculators are strictly not allowed.
External codes and tables (e.g., IS 456) are not allowed. Any necessary recommendations will be provided in the question paper.
Active electronic devices such as smartwatches, health bands, smart rings, or any Bluetooth device are strictly prohibited. Only a normal analogue or digital watch is allowed. Even if an electronic device is in switch-off mode, it is not permitted and can lead to a ban.
Candidates should follow the exam hall guidelines and carry only those items that are allowed at the centre.

Pen Usage:
Only blue and black pens are permitted.
Immediately write your Roll Number and Name using a black pen. This is a critical step; double-check your roll number.
Ball Pen vs. Gel Pen: Ball pens are highly recommended over gel pens because gel ink can spread, especially in humid conditions. Ball pens are more durable.
Recommendation: Carry extra blue and black ball pens that you are comfortable with and ensure they are working.
Pencil Usage: You can use HB or 2B pencils for drawing. However, writing answers with a pencil is not allowed.
Primary answer writing and calculations: Use blue or black pens.
Prohibited for answer writing: Pencil, red, green, or any other colored pens.
Structured sketches/diagrams: Can be made with a pen (blue or black) or pencil.
Prohibited for diagrams: Multi-colored sketch pens.
QCAB cover page (Roll Number, etc.): Fill exclusively with a black ballpoint pen.
Rough mathematical work: Can be done with a pen or pencil, but only on the designated rough work pages at the back. If you use other space, ensure you cross it out.
Identity Disclosure: Do not disclose your identity anywhere in the answer booklet except the designated cover page. This includes writing your name, phone number, signature, roll number, or religious symbols. Such disclosures can lead to disqualification.
Margin Violation: Strictly adhere to the provided margins. Writing outside the margins can result in those parts of your answer not being evaluated.
Personal Appeal: Do not make any personal appeals or requests for sympathy. Such actions can result in disciplinary action and loss of marks.
Unit Mistakes: Failure to include correct units can result in zero marks. Always check units carefully.
Poor Space Planning: Inability to complete an answer within the given space due to poor planning. Effective space management is crucial.
Incorrect Sign Conventions: Using incorrect sign conventions in diagrams like SFD and BMD. Adhere to standard sign conventions.
Irrelevant Steps and Margin Overwrite: Including unnecessary steps or writing outside margins can lead to mark deductions.
Use diagonal cross lines to cancel any attempted answer or rough work not for evaluation.
Crucially, write 'Cancelled' clearly alongside the cross-lines.
If you attempt more questions than required, explicitly cancel the one you do not want evaluated.
Never tear any page from the answer booklet, as this will lead to the cancellation of your entire answer sheet.
Finally, strike off all unused spaces, rough work, or unattempted question sections at the end.
