Ans: The heat energy supplied during the change in state is actually used up in overcoming the force of attraction between the particles from solid to liquid or liquid to gas. Since the heat is used up in overcoming the force of attraction between the particles of matter, therefore there is no rise in temperature. This heat supplied to the substance gets hidden within the particles and is therefore, known as latent heat
