In physics, we are saying that a force does work if the application of the force displaces an object in the direction of the force. In different words, work is equal to the application of a force over a distance. The amount of work a force does is directly proportional to how some distance that force moves an object. The standard formula for work and for determining the amount of work this is done on an object is:

W = F x D x physics formula

whereas W is the amount of work, F is the vector of force, D is the magnitude of displacement, and angle among  is the angle among the vector of force and the vector of displacement. The SI unit for work is the joule (J), and its dimensions are kgm2/s2. Another way to understand it is that one joule is equal to the amount of energy transferred while one newton of force moves an object a distance of 1 meter.

Whenever a force moves an object, we are saying that work has been carried out. When a ball rolls down a hill because of the force of gravity, when you choose up your backpack off the ground, when your car’s internal engine applies a force to make your wheels circulate; all of these occasions contain a force moving an object over a distance and so involve a few works. In cases where a force is carried out to an object but does not move it, no work has been performed.
