Law of conservation of mass states that mass can neither be created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction.

  • Take copper sulphate and sodium carbonate and prepare separately a 5% solution of Copper sulphate and sodium carbonate in water.
  • Take a little amount of solution of sodium carbonate in a conical flask and some solution of copper sulphate in an ignition tube.
  • Hang the ignition tube in the flask and make sure that the solutions do not get mixed.
  • Put a cork on the flask and weigh the flask with its contents
  • Now tilt and swirl the flask, so that the solutions get mixed.
  • Weigh again.
  • Chemical reaction has taken place but the mass of the flask and its contents remain same.
