Let income of person 1 = 11x

Let income of person 2 = 7x

Given ratio of expenditures = 9:5

Let expenditure of person 1 = 9y

Let expenditure of person 2 = 5y

Savings of each person = Rs 400

INCOME – EXPENDITURE = SAVING

For person 1: 11x - 9y = 400 …(i)

For person 2: 7x - 5y = 400 …(ii)

(i) ×5 - (ii) ×9

⇒ x = 

X = 200

Sum of monthly incomes of two persons = 11x + 7x

= 18x
