i. Macronutrients

Generally present in plant tissues in large amounts (in excess of 10 mmole Kg-1 of dry matter).

Includes C, H, O, N, P, S, K, Ca, Mg.

C, H, O is obtained from CO2 and H2O, while others absorbed from the soil as mineral nutrition.

 ii. Micronutrients/ Trace elements

Elements needed in very small amounts (less than 10 mmole Kg-1 of dry matter).

Includes Fe, Mn, Cu, Mo, Zn, B, Cl, Ni.
