. Who proposed the five-kingdom system of classification and on what basis

Best Answer

R.H. Whittaker, to develop a phylogenetic relationship among organism proposed five kingdom classification.

R.H. Whittaker used five criteria for classifying the different kingdoms.

  1. Based on the complexity of structure, whether the cell is prokaryotic or eukaryotic.
  2. Based on the structural organization of the body, unicellular and multicellular.
  3. Mode of nutrition that is quite diverse in multicellular organism-photoautotrophy in Plantae, absorptive heterotrophy in case of fungi, and ingestive heterotrophy in case of Animalia.
  4. Ecological lifestyles like autotrophs (producers), decomposers (fungi), and consumers ( Animalia ).
  5. Phylogenetic relationship.
