. Why is variation beneficial to the species but not necessarily for the individual?

Best Answer

If the niche of a particular species is altered the population could be wiped off. If some variation were to be present in a few inpiduals there may be some chance of their survival. The survival chances due to variations are due to the beneficial changes in the DNA. Here the theory of survival of fittest is applicable. Thus variation is beneficial to the species but not necessarily for the individual.
