. Write the name and general formula of a chain of hydrocarbons in which an addition reaction with hydrogen can take place

Stating  the essential  conditions required for an addition reaction to occur write the chemical equation giving the name of the reactant and the product of such a reaction.

Ans. Ans. Addition reactions are a characteristic property of unsaturated hydrocarbons, i.e. Alkenes and Alkynes.

General formula of-Alkene: CnH2n,

 Alkyne: CnH2n-2

For  example, Ethene  undergoes  addition reaction  with  hydrogen  when  heated  in  the presence of nickel catalyst to form ethane saturated  hydrocarbon.

general formula

Thus addition of hydrogen to an unsaturated hydrocarbon gives a saturated hydrocarbon.

This reaction is known as hydrogenation.
