Write the reactions of F2 and C12 with water.
Reaction of F2 with water: Unlike other halogens, fluorine being highly electronegative reacts vigorously with water.
The reactions shown by fluorine with water produces hydrogen fluoride (HF) , oxygen (O2) or ozone gas (O3) varying with the amount of fluorine used as a reactant and also with the way it is fed.
The two types of reactions are:
- When less amount of fluorine gas is fed into water slowly.
2F2(g)+ 2H2O(1) → 4HF(aq) + O2(g)
- When excess of fluorine gas is fed fast into water.
3F2(g) + 3H2O(1) → 6HF(aq) + O3(g)
Reaction of C12 with water: Chlorine reacts with water to give a green solution.
This reaction takes place in the absence of sunlight and the reaction gives a mixture of hydrochloric acid (HC1) and chloric (I) acid (hypochlorous acid,HOC1 )
Fluorine reacts violently with water forming hydrogen fluoride and liberates oxygen or ozone.
Chlorine reacts with water to give hydrochloric acid and hypochlorous acid.
