i. Temporary hardness : This is due to the presence of bicarbonates of calcium and magnesium. It is also called carbonate hardness.
ii. Permanent hardness :This is due to the presence of chlorides and sulphates of calcium and magnesium. It is also called non-carbonate hardness.
