Large Number Around Us: Class 7 Maths, PDF Notes

Large Numbers Around Us helps students understand and work with very big numbers used in daily life. It explains how to read, write, and compare large numbers, use the Indian and International place value systems, and perform basic operations like addition and subtraction. Students also learn estimation and the use of large numbers in real-world situations such as population, money, and distance.

Large Numbers Around Us: We use numbers every day, but sometimes we deal with very big ones. The chapter Large Numbers Around Us teaches how to handle big numbers easily. Students learn how to count, compare, and estimate large values.

These numbers appear in newspapers, bank accounts, and sports records. Understanding them helps students solve real-life math problems correctly.

Understanding Large Numbers

Numbers can be small, like 5 or 50, but sometimes they are huge, like 50,00,000 or 1,00,00,000. These are called Large Numbers. They are used to count things like city population, company income, or distance between planets.
In this lesson, students learn how to read and write these numbers using commas and place value charts. For example:

  • 1,00,000 is read as one lakh.
  • 10,00,000 is read as ten lakh.
  • 1,00,00,000 is one crore.

The concept of place value is very important because it tells us the value of each digit in a number based on its position.

Indian and International Number System

There are two main systems for writing large numbers, the Indian Number System and the International Number System.
In the
Indian system, numbers are grouped as ones, thousands, lakhs, and crores. For example:

  • 7,54,36,210 → Seven crore fifty-four lakh thirty-six thousand two hundred ten.

In the International system, the same number is written as:

  • 75,436,210 → Seventy-five million four hundred thirty-six thousand two hundred ten.

Learning both systems helps students read and understand numbers used in books, news, and other countries.

Estimation and Rounding Off

We do not always need the exact number. Sometimes we only need an approximate answer. This is called estimation. For example, if a city has 4,97,845 people, we can say about five lakh people.

Estimation helps in shopping, travel, and time management. Students also learn rounding off numbers to the nearest tens, hundreds, or thousands.
For example:

  • 546 rounds to 550 (nearest ten).
  • 5,432 rounds to 5,000 (nearest thousand).

Using Large Numbers in Daily Life

Large Numbers Around Us are used everywhere, in school, news, sports, and the environment.

  • Population of India is about 140 crore.
  • The distance from Earth to the Moon is about 3,84,000 km.
  • A cricket match score can reach 3,50,000 views online.

Learning large numbers helps us understand data, make decisions, and relate mathematics to real-life examples.
