The Staff Selection Commission has reopened the self-slot selection window for the Junior Engineer Paper 1 exam, giving candidates time until 28 November 2025 to mark their preferences. The option had earlier closed on 13 November. Candidates now get another chance to log in at ssc.gov.in and submit their choices through the feedback module.
This step isn’t optional. The commission has said that anyone who skips the selection process will not be assigned a city and will not receive an admit card. According to the SSC, cities will be allotted on a “best-effort basis”. If seats fill up, candidates may be moved to the nearest city where space is available.
Those who have already locked in their choices can now see their allotted city on the SSC website.
The SSC recently rolled out a system that lets candidates choose the exam city, date, and shift on their own. The idea is to make centre allocation more precise and more convenient.
To submit their choices, candidates need to log in to the SSC portal and select up to three cities, followed by their preferred date and shift. If all options in those cities are taken, they can still pick from whatever cities remain open, though they may not get to choose the date and shift. Once submitted, the choices can’t be revised. Candidates who miss the deadline risk getting an automatically assigned centre. The current extension is unusual, and the commission has framed it as an effort to maintain fairness during a busier recruitment cycle. This change comes as the SSC prepares for one of its biggest years, with 5,308 positions each for JEs and SIs, and a massive applicant pool. The move signals a shift toward more digital, candidate-focused exams, in line with the wider push for digital governance.
Separately, the SSC closes registrations for the Junior Engineer Recruitment 2025 on the evening of 21 July 2025. Applications for 1,340 posts in Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical engineering are open on ssc.gov.in. The advertisement released on 30 June 2025 details Group B non-gazetted roles under Level-6 of the 7th Central Pay Commission, with pay ranging from Rs 35,400 to Rs 1,12,400 a month.
