In a notification dated 14 February 2026, the Central Board of Secondary Education clarified doubts about the new twice a year Class 10 Board exam system. The Board said it has received requests from students and parents asking whether those who are unable to appear in the first Board examination can directly take the second one.
CBSE has now made it clear that this will not be allowed under its policy. The first Board examination is mandatory for all students.
Under the new system starting in 2026, every Class 10 student must appear in the first Board exam. The second exam is not a replacement for students who skip the first attempt without meeting eligibility rules.
The second Board exam is mainly for:
• Students who have passed and want to improve marks in up to three subjects
• Students placed in the compartment category after the first exam
• Students eligible under improvement plus compartment rules
Improvement can be taken in any three main subjects such as Science, Mathematics, Social Science and Languages.
CBSE has clearly stated that if a student does not appear in three or more subjects in the first Board examination, they will not be allowed to sit for the second exam.
Such students will be placed in the “Essential Repeat” category. They will have to wait and appear in the next main Board examination in February the following year.
The Board has also said that requests in such cases will not be entertained.
Students who pass Class 10 will not be allowed to take additional or stand alone subjects under the second exam system.
The message from CBSE is simple. The first Board exam is compulsory. The second exam is meant for improvement or compartment cases, not as a backup for missing the main exam.
Students are advised to plan carefully and make sure they appear in all subjects in the first attempt to avoid losing a year.
