As the Central Board of Secondary Education moves ahead with its 2026 examination reforms, many Class 12 students and parents are confused about improvement exams, the number of attempts, and whether the two-board-exam system applies to them.
To clarify, CBSE Controller of Examinations Sanyam Bharadwaj addressed key doubts regarding improvement examinations for Classes 10 and 12.
Class 12 students get two different routes to improve their marks:
1. Supplementary Examination (July 2026)
Improvement allowed in only one subject
Scheduled around July 15, 2026
Suitable for quick score correction for admissions
2. Main Board Exam Next Year (Feb 2027)
Required if you want improvement in more than one subject
Students must reappear in the regular annual board exam cycle
No — Class 12 students do not have the flexibility of multiple attempts within the same academic session. As per the policy of the Central Board of Secondary Education, the twice-a-year examination model applies only to Class 10.
For Class 12, the board follows a single main examination cycle every year.
If a student wants to improve marks:
They may take the supplementary exam (one subject only) in the same year, or
Reappear in the next year’s main board exam for improvement in multiple subjects
This means students must plan carefully — Class 12 improvement is more structured and cannot be used as a quick retry opportunity like Class 10.
Yes — Class 10 students are given a much more flexible system. The second examination conducted by CBSE functions as an improvement attempt rather than a failure-only exam.
Students get two chances to apply:
A short application window right after the main exams (based on expected performance)
Another chance after the results (based on actual marks)
After applying and paying the examination fee, they can reappear and the better score is considered.
This system is designed to reduce academic pressure and allow students to improve performance without waiting an entire year, making the Class 10 evaluation more student-friendly compared to the Class 12 evaluation.
For Class 12, improvement is allowed in only one subject, and the exam is scheduled around 15 July 2026. Students can apply for improvement or compartment exams soon after the results are declared (expected in May 2026). The Central Board of Secondary Education will publish a detailed notification explaining the application steps and deadlines.
CBSE does not officially calculate or announce percentages. The board only mentions subject-wise marks on the marksheet.
Colleges, universities, or recruiting bodies calculate the percentage themselves according to their admission or eligibility criteria.
