JEE Main 2026: Top Ways to Calculate Your Score, Percentile, Rank

Preparing for JEE Main is a long and dedicated journey. Once the exam is over, the biggest concern for most students is understanding how their performance translates into marks, percentile, and rank. Since JEE Main follows a normalized scoring system across multiple shifts, calculating your final position requires a step-by-step approach.

This explainer will help you clearly understand how to calculate your raw marks, interpret your percentile score, and estimate your likely rank in a simple and structured way.

1. Calculate Your JEE MAIN 2026 Score (Out of 300)

JEE Main 2026 consists of 75 questions, divided equally among:

  • Physics – 25 questions

  • Chemistry – 25 questions

  • Mathematics – 25 questions

Each subject carries 100 marks, making the total paper 300 marks.

Official Marking Scheme (2026)

  • Correct Answer: +4 marks

  • Incorrect MCQ: –1 mark

  • Numerical Value Question (Correct): +4 marks

  • Numerical Value Question (Incorrect): 0 marks (No negative marking)

  • Unattempted Question: 0 marks

Formula to Calculate Raw Score:

Total Raw Score = (Total Correct × 4) – (Incorrect MCQs × 1)

For example, if you answered:

  • 52 questions correctly

  • 8 MCQs incorrectly

Your score would be:

(52 × 4) – (8 × 1)
= 208 – 8
= 200 marks

This is your raw score out of 300.

It is advisable to carefully check your response sheet with the official answer key before calculating your marks to ensure accuracy.

2. Understand Your JEE MAIN 2026 Percentile Score

Unlike many traditional exams, JEE Main does not directly use raw marks to prepare the merit list. Since the examination is conducted in multiple sessions with varying difficulty levels, the National Testing Agency (NTA) applies a normalization process.

Instead of marks, your result shows a Percentile Score.

What Does Percentile Mean?

If you secure a 99 percentile, it means you have scored equal to or better than 99% of candidates who appeared in your specific shift.

It does not mean 99% marks. It represents your relative performance compared to other students in your session.

Percentile Formula Used by NTA:

Percentile = 100 × (Number of candidates with raw score ≤ your score) / Total number of candidates in that shift

This system ensures fairness across different shifts.
