MBBS Course Fee Update 2026: National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a clear directive to all medical colleges, institutions, and universities: MBBS fees must only be charged for the prescribed academic duration of 4.5 years. Any attempt to charge fees for the full 5 or 5.5 years, including the internship period, is not consistent with the official course structure and could be considered unfair.
Recently, the NMC received complaints that some colleges were charging MBBS students for the entire duration of the course, including the internship year. The Commission emphasized that such practices are not aligned with the Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) Guidelines 2024 under the Graduate Medical Education Regulations (GMER).
According to the NMC regulations:
Academic Study: 4.5 years (54 months)
Compulsory Rotating Internship (CRMI): 1 year
The internship year is a practical training period and does not involve regular classroom teaching. Therefore, students should not be charged tuition fees during this period.
All medical colleges, institutions, and universities are now directed to:
Charge MBBS fees only for the 4½ years of academic study
Strictly comply with the NMC Act 2019, GMER, and related regulations
The NMC has warned that any violation of these directions will be taken seriously. Colleges found overcharging students may face strict action under the law.
This clarification is a relief for MBBS students and their families, ensuring:
Fair and transparent fee practices
No extra financial burden during internship
Clear understanding of the academic and fee structure
With this directive, the NMC has reinforced its commitment to protecting students’ rights and ensuring a fair medical education system in India.
