The NEET UG 2026 exam, conducted by the National Testing Agency, is one of the most competitive entrance tests for medical aspirants in India. While months (or even years) of preparation are crucial, many students end up losing marks due to simple and avoidable mistakes on exam day. Being aware of these common errors can help you stay calm, focused, and perform at your best.
A frequent mistake is leaving document preparation until the last moment. Candidates should arrange all required documents at least a day before the exam. These include:
Admit card with a photograph attached
Valid photo ID proof
Passport-size and postcard-size photographs
Last-minute confusion can lead to missing essential documents, which may result in being denied entry to the exam hall.
Candidates travelling to another city should ideally reach a day in advance. Delays due to traffic, unfamiliar routes, or unexpected issues can increase stress levels. Visiting the centre beforehand helps avoid confusion on exam day.
Students should avoid carrying mobile phones, bags, coins, or extra accessories. Many centres either do not provide baggage facilities or do not guarantee safety. Carry only essential documents and minimal cash.
Following the dress code is mandatory. Candidates should:
Wear light clothes with half sleeves and no collars
Avoid metal items, buttons, or accessories
Not wear jewellery, watches, or hair accessories
Prefer simple slippers or sandals
Ignoring these rules can lead to delays during security checks.
Some candidates get involved in unnecessary arguments with staff over rules. This only increases stress and negatively affects performance. It is always better to stay calm, cooperate, and focus on the exam.
Candidates must not open the question booklet or OMR sheet until instructed by the invigilator. Doing so may lead to warnings or penalties and disturb your mental focus before the exam begins.
Mistakes in filling details such as roll number or test booklet number can be disastrous. Even if all answers are correct, incorrect details may invalidate the result. Fill the OMR sheet carefully and without rushing.
Minor errors in reading questions or calculations can cost valuable marks. Always:
Read questions carefully, especially terms like “correct” or “incorrect”
Avoid calculation mistakes
Do rough work neatly
Accuracy is often more important than speed.
Spending too much time on a single question can affect overall performance. If stuck, move on and return later. Many questions become easier when revisited with a fresh perspective.
Students may panic if the paper seems tough or become overconfident if it appears easy. Remember:
A tough paper is tough for everyone
An easy paper raises the cutoff
Stay balanced and maintain focus throughout the exam.
Avoid discussing questions with friends before entering the exam hall. It can reduce confidence and distract your focus if you are unsure about certain topics.
Discussing these common mistakes, PW faculty Dr. Akanksha Agrawal said, “I hope and pray that all of you are able to give this exam to the best of your ability after all the hard work you’ve put in. Avoid common mistakes that can easily be prevented, and stay calm and relaxed during the exam. My blessings and prayers are with you.
No matter how the paper turns out, it will be the same for everyone. Sincere students are always rewarded. We may not always know what is good or bad for us, but what we can do is give our best effort in the present moment.”
She further added, “I always say—you can guarantee your efforts, but not the results. So don’t put unnecessary pressure on yourself. Do your best, and remember that life is much bigger than one exam. This test does not define you.”
However, the guidelines issued by the National Testing Agency are designed to ensure fairness and smooth conduct of the exam.
Focus on accuracy, manage your time wisely, and avoid these common mistakes. Remember, you can control your effort—not the outcome. Give your best and approach the exam with confidence and a clear mind.
