The National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially outlined the NEET UG 2026 eligibility criteria, introducing critical updates for medical aspirants across India and abroad. As the sole gateway for admission to MBBS, BDS, and AYUSH courses, understanding these regulations is the first and most vital step for any student aiming for a career in medicine.
From the removal of the upper age limit to specific mandates for students eyeing foreign medical institutes, here is everything you need to know about the 2026 eligibility landscape.
According to the Graduate Medical Education Regulation-2023 (Amendment), candidates must meet a specific minimum age requirement to be eligible for the examination.
The Cut-off Date: Candidates must have completed 17 years of age on or before December 31, 2026.
Birth Date Requirement: For candidates in all categories—including General (UR), General-EWS, SC, ST, OBC-NCL, and PwBD—you must have been born on or before December 31, 2009.
Verification: This requirement is strictly enforced, and candidates born on or after January 1, 2010, will not be allowed to register for the 2026 session.
In a move that brings massive relief to thousands of older aspirants and repeaters, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has confirmed that there is now no upper age limit for appearing in NEET UG 2026.
Universal Access: This policy applies to all candidates regardless of their category.
Impact: Aspirants over the age of 25 (General) or 30 (Reserved) can now pursue their medical dreams without legal or regulatory barriers.
Unlimited Attempts: Alongside the age cap removal, there is no restriction on the number of attempts a candidate can make, provided they continue to meet the basic educational requirements.
To qualify for MBBS or BDS seats, meeting the minimum marks in core science subjects is mandatory.
Core Subjects: Candidates must have passed Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as compulsory subjects.
Minimum Marks (Aggregate in PCB):
General / General-EWS: 50%.
SC / ST / OBC-NCL: 40%.
PwD (General-EWS): 45%.
Result Awaited: Students appearing for their Class 12 exams in 2026 are eligible to apply (using Qualifying Code 01), but they must pass the exam before the first round of counselling.
A crucial regulation remains in place for Indian Citizens and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) who plan to pursue their medical degrees outside of India.
Foreign Medical Institutes: If you intend to study MBBS or BDS in a foreign medical institute and wish to practice in India later, qualifying for NEET UG is mandatory.
Registration Requirement: Without a valid NEET score, these students will not be eligible to appear for the NMC's licensing examinations (such as the upcoming NExT) or register as a medical practitioner in India upon their return.
