The National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially released the eligibility and documentation roadmap for international candidates—including Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), and Foreign Nationals—for the NEET (UG) 2026 exam.
In a major relief to OCI cardholders, the NTA has confirmed their eligibility for a broader range of seats following landmark judicial interventions. If you are an international applicant, here is a definitive guide to the new rules, mandatory document uploads, and registration fees.
The following candidates are eligible to appear for NEET UG 2026, subject to applicable rules:
Non-Resident Indians (NRIs)
Overseas Citizens of India (OCI)
Foreign Nationals
Persons of Indian Origin (PIO)
However, appearing for NEET does not automatically guarantee admission. Final eligibility depends on counselling rules set by central and state authorities.
The 2026 guidelines emphasise that medical and dental admissions are subject to the specific rules of the Government of India and respective State Governments.
Nationality Status: Indian Nationals, NRIs, OCIs, Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), and Foreign Nationals are all eligible to appear for the exam.
OCI Rights Reinstated: Following the Supreme Court Order dated 03.02.2023 (WP No. 891 of 2021), OCI candidates are now entitled to the rights and privileges they held prior to the restrictive notification of March 2021. This often allows them to compete for seats beyond just the NRI-reserved quota, depending on state-specific norms.
Academic Equivalent: Candidates must have passed Class 12 (or an equivalent exam in their home country) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as core subjects.
International students must upload specific proof of status during the online application process. Failure to provide these digital copies can lead to immediate disqualification.
| Mandatory Documents for Online Registration | |
| Candidate Type | Required Document for Upload |
| NRI Candidates | A certificate from the concerned Indian Diplomatic Mission in their country of residence confirming NRI status. |
| OCI Candidates | Scanned copy of the OCI Card and a certificate from the Indian Diplomatic Mission. |
| Foreign Nationals | Relevant pages of a valid Passport or a Citizenship Certificate from the Competent Authority of their country. |
Pro-Tip: Candidates must retain the original physical copies of these documents, as they will be strictly verified during the counselling and admission stage.
To ensure uniformity, the NTA has provided specific formats for Embassy and Citizenship certificates.
Appendix VI: Format for the Embassy Certificate for NRI candidates.
Appendix VII: Format for Documentary Proof of Citizenship for Foreign and OCI candidates.
File Specifications: Certificates must be uploaded in PDF format, typically ranging from 50 KB to 300 KB.
While the fee for Indian residents varies by category, international and NRI applicants have a uniform fee structure regardless of their category.
Application Fee: ₹9,500/- (for candidates opting for exam centres outside India).
Payment Deadline: The fee must be successfully paid via online modes (UPI, Credit/Debit Card, Net-banking) by March 8, 2026 (11:50 PM).
Verify State Norms: Before applying, Foreign Nationals should confirm their eligibility with the competent state and counselling authorities where they wish to seek admission.
One Application Only: A candidate is strictly prohibited from submitting more than one application form. Multiple registrations will be flagged as Unfair Means (UFM).
Active Contacts: Ensure the registered email and mobile number belong to you or your parents, as all international communication from NTA will happen through these channels.
Important Date: The NEET UG 2026 exam is scheduled for May 3, 2026 (Sunday). Ensure your identity and citizenship documents are in order at least 48 hours before the registration portal closes on March 8th.
