How to Calculate UPSC Prelims 2026 Score Using the Answer Key

Candidates can calculate their estimated score now using the official provisional answer key. Here is how:

Step 1: Download the Official Provisional Answer Key

Visit upsc.gov.in and navigate to the "What's New" section. Search for "Provisional Answer Key: Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2026" and download the PDFs for both General Studies Paper-I and General Studies Paper-II (CSAT).

Step 2: Apply the Correct Marking Scheme

How to Calculate UPSC Prelims 2026 Score Using the Answer Key
Paper Marks Per Correct Answer Negative Marking (Wrong Answer) Total Marks
GS Paper 1 +2 −0.66 (1/3 of 2) 200
CSAT (GS Paper 2) +2.5 −0.83 (1/3 of 2.5) 200

Formula for GS Paper 1:

Score = (Correct Answers × 2) − (Wrong Answers × 0.66)

Formula for CSAT:

Score = (Correct Answers × 2.5) − (Wrong Answers × 0.83)

Unattempted questions carry zero marks — no penalty.

Step 3: Check CSAT Qualifying Status

The result is based on scores from General Studies Paper I. The CSAT paper is qualifying in nature with a minimum requirement of 33% marks. In absolute terms, candidates must score at least 66.67 out of 200 in CSAT to remain eligible — irrespective of their GS Paper 1 score. Candidates who score above the GS Paper 1 cutoff but fail to clear CSAT will not appear in the qualified list.

Step 4: Compare Your Score Against the Expected Cutoff

Use the expected cutoff ranges in the section below to assess your chances of qualifying for UPSC Mains 2026.

The official cutoff for UPSC Prelims 2026 will not be released until the entire CSE 2026 cycle concludes (expected around 2027). However, here are expert projections based on post-exam analysis:

UPSC Prelims 2026 Expected Cutoff — Category-Wise
Category Expected Cutoff 2026 (Projected) Official Cutoff 2025

All marks are out of 200 (GS Paper 1 only)

The General category cutoff climbed from 75.41 marks in 2023 to 92.66 marks in 2025.

ClearIAS expects the General category cut-off to be around 82–86 marks, subject to the final answer key, number of dropped questions, CSAT difficulty, and actual category-wise performance of candidates. Other analysts place the General category range between 90 and 100, citing a moderate to difficult paper.

UPSC Prelims 2026: What's New This Year

This year, UPSC introduced the provisional answer key immediately after the Prelims exam for the first time — a historic change from previous years when the answer key was released only after the entire selection process concluded, which used to take over a year.

Candidates were given an opportunity to submit representations (objections) against the provisional answer key via the online QPRep portal. The window to submit representations closed on May 31, 2026, at 6:00 PM. All objections are reviewed by a panel of subject matter experts before the final answer key and result are published.
