Candidates belonging to OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD/PwBD and Third Gender categories must have secured at least 50% marks without rounding off in their Master's degree or equivalent examination.
The qualifying degree should be in a relevant subject recognised by UGC.
Candidates who are:
Pursuing their Master's degree or equivalent course;
Appearing in the final-year Master's examination with results awaited; or
Whose qualifying examination has been delayed,
may apply provisionally for UGC NET.
For candidates seeking JRF or Assistant Professor eligibility, the Master's degree or equivalent qualification must subsequently be completed with the required percentage within two years from the date of declaration of the NET result.
Candidates qualifying for PhD admission only must complete the Master's degree or equivalent qualification within one year from the date of declaration of the NET result, subject to the prescribed conditions.
Candidates who have completed a 4-year/8-semester Bachelor's degree can also appear for UGC NET, subject to the prescribed eligibility conditions.
Such candidates must have secured at least 75% marks in aggregate or an equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed.
A 5% relaxation in marks or equivalent grade may be available to candidates belonging to SC, ST, OBC-NCL, Differently-Abled, EWS and other categories as specified by the Commission.
Candidates qualifying for UGC NET on the basis of a four-year Bachelor's degree are eligible for:
Award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)
Admission to PhD
However, they are not eligible for appointment as Assistant Professor on the basis of the four-year Bachelor's degree route.
Candidates pursuing a four-year/8-semester Bachelor's degree and studying in the last semester/year may also apply provisionally, subject to fulfilment of the prescribed requirements.
Candidates with a four-year Bachelor's degree may appear in the UGC NET subject in which they intend to pursue a PhD, irrespective of the discipline in which they obtained their four-year Bachelor's degree.
The category-wise minimum marks required for UGC NET are given below:
| Candidate Category | Minimum Marks in Master's Degree/Equivalent |
|---|---|
| General/Unreserved/General-EWS | 55% |
| OBC-NCL | 50% |
| SC | 50% |
| ST | 50% |
| PwD/PwBD | 50% |
| Third Gender | 50% |
The required percentage is calculated without rounding off. Candidates who completed their Master's-level examination by 19 September 1991 are eligible for a 5% relaxation in the minimum marks requirement.
The UGC NET age limit depends on the category of eligibility. There is an upper age limit for candidates applying for JRF, while there is no upper age limit for Assistant Professor or PhD admission.
For the June 2026 session, candidates applying for Junior Research Fellowship were required to be not more than 30 years of age as on 1 June 2026.
The applicable age cut-off date for the December 2026 session will be confirmed in the official December 2026 Information Bulletin.
The following candidates were eligible for age relaxation under the June 2026 criteria:
| Category/Condition | Age Relaxation |
|---|---|
| OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD/PwBD, Third Gender | Up to 5 years |
| Women candidates | Up to 5 years |
| Relevant research experience | Up to 5 years, subject to conditions |

The total age relaxation on the applicable grounds cannot exceed 5 years.
There is no upper age limit for candidates applying for UGC NET eligibility for Assistant Professor.
There is no upper age limit for candidates applying for UGC NET for admission to PhD.
Candidates should generally appear for UGC NET in the subject of their Post-Graduation.
If the candidate's Post-Graduation subject is not included in the list of UGC NET subjects, they may appear in a related subject.
Candidates qualifying for JRF are eligible to pursue research in the subject of their Post-Graduation or a related subject, as applicable.
Candidates with a four-year Bachelor's degree have a separate provision: they can appear in the subject in which they wish to pursue a PhD, irrespective of the discipline in which they completed their four-year Bachelor's degree.
Candidates who qualify UGC NET for Assistant Professor are governed by the recruitment rules and regulations of the concerned university, college or state government.
NET/SET/SLET eligibility and applicable exemptions are governed by the relevant UGC regulations and amendments.
Some important exemptions mentioned in the latest official bulletin include:
Candidates who cleared the UGC/CSIR JRF examination before 1989 are exempted from appearing in NET.
Candidates who cleared a UGC-accredited SET for Assistant Professor before 1 June 2002 are exempt from NET and can apply for Assistant Professor positions anywhere in India.
Candidates who cleared SET on or after 1 June 2002 can apply for Assistant Professor positions only in universities/colleges located in the state from which they cleared the SET.
UGC NET qualification can provide eligibility for PhD admission depending on the category in which the candidate qualifies.
The current framework provides three broad qualification categories:
| Qualification Category | JRF | Assistant Professor | PhD Admission |
|---|---|---|---|
| JRF + Assistant Professor + PhD | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Assistant Professor + PhD | No | Yes | Yes |
| PhD Admission Only | No | No | Yes |
Candidates should check the admission rules of the concerned university or institution because PhD admission requirements are governed by the applicable regulations and institutional procedures.
Candidates holding a qualification from a foreign educational institution are advised to obtain equivalence of their qualification from UGC as applicable.
Candidates holding a Post-Graduate Diploma awarded by an Indian institute should ascertain its equivalence with a Master's degree from a recognised Indian university through the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
UGC NET is conducted to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for JRF, Assistant Professor and/or PhD admission in Indian universities and colleges, as applicable.
There is no specific maximum number of attempts prescribed for UGC NET. Candidates can appear for the examination multiple times as long as they satisfy the eligibility requirements applicable to the session.
However, candidates applying for JRF must satisfy the prescribed age limit and applicable age-relaxation rules. Therefore, the absence of an attempt limit does not mean that JRF eligibility is available without an age restriction.
Candidates applying for Assistant Professor or PhD admission do not have an upper age limit under the latest eligibility criteria.
