The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has officially announced a landmark shift in the Indian education system. Starting from the 2026 academic session, Class 10 students will have the opportunity to appear for board examinations twice in a single year. This reform, aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aims to eliminate the high-stakes pressure of a single annual exam and provide students with a performance-based safety net.

The new assessment structure introduces a staggered timeline designed to offer flexibility while maintaining academic rigor. According to official reports from PTI, the system will operate under a "mandatory-first" model.
| CBSE Two-Exam System: Key Schedule and Rules | |
| Feature | Details for 2026 Session |
| Phase 1 (Main Exam) | Mandatory; Scheduled for February 17 – March 10, 2026 |
| Phase 2 (Improvement/Optional) | Optional; Scheduled for May 15 – June 1, 2026 |
| Scoring Policy | Best-of-two scores will be retained for the final marksheet |
| Subject Limit | Students can re-appear in up to three subjects in the second phase |
| Internal Assessment | Conducted once annually; scores remain valid for both attempts |
The move is strategically designed to combat "exam anxiety" by providing a second chance within the same academic cycle.
Rote Learning to Competency: The 2026 exams will feature 50% competency-based questions, focusing on critical thinking, case studies, and real-world application rather than memorization.
Safety Net for Emergencies: Students who miss exams due to medical reasons or sports commitments can now utilize the May window without losing a full academic year.
Strict Attendance Mandate: CBSE has reinforced the 75% minimum attendance rule. Students failing to meet this requirement or skipping the first exam without a valid reason may be barred from the second attempt.
Officials have clarified that the first exam is not a "mock test." It is a serious, main assessment. The second exam is specifically for students who either failed to clear a subject (compartment) or wish to improve their percentage to meet competitive requirements for Class 11 stream selection.
