With the CBSE Class 10 Board Exam 2026 set to begin on February 17, many students are anxious about performance and final scores. To address this pressure, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) continues its two-attempt board exam policy, allowing Class 10 students a second opportunity within the same academic year to improve marks or clear compartment subjects.
This reform, often referred to as the CBSE second board exam or CBSE May exam, is aimed at reducing stress and ensuring that a single exam does not define a student’s academic future.
Under CBSE’s revised examination framework, students can appear for board exams twice in one academic session:
First Attempt: February–March (main board examination)
Second Attempt: May (improvement / compartment / re-examination)
The second exam acts as a structured second chance for students who want to improve their Class 10 board scores or need to clear compartment subjects.
Students can appear in the CBSE improvement exam 2024-style pattern (continuing in 2026) under the following conditions:
Students who have passed the February exam can reappear to improve marks.
Improvement is allowed in up to three subjects only.
Subjects must be chosen from main subjects such as:
Science
Mathematics
Social Science
Languages
This option is especially useful for students aiming to strengthen their academic profile for Class 11 streams.
Students receiving a “Compartment” result in one or two subjects can reappear in those subjects during the May exam.
Clearing the compartment ensures continuation without losing an academic year.
CBSE has laid down strict conditions for the second attempt:
First Exam Is Compulsory: Students must appear in the February board exam. Direct entry into the May exam is not allowed.
Essential Repeat Clause: Students failing in three or more subjects are categorized as “Essential Repeat” and must wait for the next year’s main exam.
No New Subjects Allowed: Students cannot add or change subjects after passing Class 10.
Provisional Admission to Class 11: Students with compartment results may get provisional Class 11 admission, which is confirmed only after May exam results.
Sportspersons: Students whose national or international sports events clash with board exams can appear in the May attempt.
CWSN Students: All examination facilities provided during the main exam are extended to the second exam as well.
Score Recovery Window: A poor performance in one paper doesn’t end academic aspirations.
Focused Preparation: Students get nearly two months to prepare for selected subjects.
Reduced Academic Pressure: The policy acknowledges that board exams are high-stakes and students may underperform once.
Stream Flexibility: Improved marks can help students qualify for preferred streams in Class 11.
CBSE allows a second board exam in May to improve marks or clear compartments.
Improvement is limited to three main subjects.
Skipping the February exam is not permitted.
The policy offers a clear roadmap to retake board exams without losing a year.
