After a Class 10 student died by suicide following allegations of mental harassment, Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood said on Friday that he will seek reports from all schools in the capital on compliance with CBSE guidelines related to students’ psychological well-being. “A committee has been set up to examine the case, and the school has taken initial steps. I am treating this as a concerned parent,” Sood said. He added that he will write to every school to confirm whether CBSE’s mental health directives are being followed.
Delhi Schools Will See Major Upgrades Under the National Education Policy
Along with the mental-health review, Delhi’s schools will see major upgrades under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Education Minister Ashish Sood said campuses under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Delhi government will be modernised through CSR support, with planned changes in classroom layout, improved furniture and the use of AI-based teaching tools. At an event, Sood said, “It fills me with pride to be among our young learners today.
Having studied in a government school myself, this feels like a homecoming; these bags we hand out today are not just for books, they carry the dreams and aspirations of students."He added that the government, guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, aims to raise the standard of Delhi’s public schools so high that “future generations will seek recommendations for admission".Sood also called on teachers to play a stronger role in leading change inside classrooms, saying the responsibility for improving education rests with the government, the community and supporting organisations.
Why was this step taken?
The student from St Columba’s School died on Tuesday after jumping from the Rajendra Place metro station platform around 2.30 pm. He was taken to BLK Super Speciality Hospital, where he was declared dead.On Thursday, the education department formed an inquiry committee, and the school suspended four staff members, the headmistress, a coordinator and two teachers — pending investigation.
Police said the student left a note naming some teachers and alleging mental harassment, along with a request for action against them and a wish to donate his organs. An FIR was filed, and the four teachers were suspended with immediate effect. The order directed them to stay available for communication and not visit the school or contact students, staff or parents without written approval.
