As per the official notification issued by IIT Roorkee, any individual who does not hold Indian citizenship — whether by birth or through naturalization — is classified as a foreign national for JEE Advanced 2026. This classification applies regardless of how long the candidate has lived in India or their current residential status.
Foreign national candidates do not compete within the standard domestic merit pool. Instead, they are considered for supernumerary seats capped at a maximum of 10 percent of the total intake for each academic stream. These additional seats fall entirely outside the reservation framework mandated by the Constitution of India, which means no portion of these seats is allocated under GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, or PwD categories. There are also no gender-based subdivisions within this international pool, making the selection process entirely performance-based.
For candidates holding Overseas Citizen of India or Person of Indian Origin cards, eligibility under JEE Advanced 2026 depends entirely on one critical date: March 4, 2021.
Candidates who received their OCI or PIO card before March 4, 2021 have the option to choose their registration category. They may either register as a foreign national and compete for the 10 percent supernumerary seats, or register as an Indian applicant and be assessed under the domestic admission framework, including applicable reservation categories.
Candidates who received their OCI card on or after March 4, 2021 are governed by updated government directives and must verify their specific category eligibility at jeeadv.ac.in before initiating registration.
The fee payment deadline falls on May 4, just two days after registration closes on May 2. Candidates are strongly advised to begin the process well in advance and keep the following documents ready before starting the application: passport and nationality proof, OCI or PIO card if applicable, JEE Main 2026 scorecard, recent passport-size photograph, and category certificates wherever required.
JEE Advanced 2026 is conducted by IIT Roorkee on behalf of the Joint Admission Board and serves as the sole entrance pathway to undergraduate programs across all 23 Indian Institutes of Technology in India.
