As the National Testing Agency (NTA) prepares to announce the results for the UGC NET December 2025 cycle, thousands of aspirants are buzzing with one major question: "How does normalization work?"
If you appeared for the exam between December 31, 2025, and January 7, 2026, your raw marks are not the final word. Because the exam is conducted across multiple shifts and days, the difficulty level of each paper can vary. To ensure a level playing field, the NTA uses a sophisticated Normalization Procedure based on Percentile Scores.
Normalization is a statistical process used to compare the scores of candidates across different sessions. The primary goal is to ensure that a candidate who sat for a "hard" paper is not at a disadvantage compared to someone who had an "easy" paper.
Key Fact: NTA does not use your actual marks (out of 300) to prepare the merit list. Instead, it converts them into NTA Scores (Percentiles).
The percentile score indicates the percentage of candidates who have scored equal to or below a particular raw score in that specific session.
The formula used by NTA is:
Precision: These scores are calculated up to 7 decimal places to prevent ties and ensure absolute accuracy.
The 100 Percentile: The topper of each shift, regardless of their raw marks, will always receive a 100 percentile score.
Distribution of Candidates: Candidates are randomly assigned to shifts to ensure each session has a similar demographic and number of test-takers.
Raw Score Calculation: Your marks are calculated (2 marks for each correct answer, zero for incorrect).
Session-wise Percentile: Percentiles are calculated for each session separately.
Compilation of NTA Score: The percentiles from all shifts are merged to create a final consolidated merit list.
While the minimum qualifying marks remain fixed (40% for General/EWS and 35% for OBC-NCL/SC/ST/PwD), the cut-off percentile varies by subject and category.
| Expected UGC NET 2025 Cut Off | ||

| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 35% | 92 - 95 (JRF) / 82 - 86 (LS) |
| SC / ST | 35% | 85 - 89 (JRF) / 75 - 80 (LS) |
