[11:45 PM | June 15, 2026] — BREAKING | UPSC CSE Prelims Result 2026 officially declared

The Union Public Service Commission announced on June 15, 2026 that 13,343 candidates have qualified the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 for the Mains. The official UPSC statement read: against 1,016 vacancies notified for the Civil Services Examination 2026, a total of 13,343 candidates have been shortlisted for the Civil Services Main Examination 2026.

This compares with 14,161 candidates shortlisted for Mains in CSE 2025 against 1,087 notified vacancies and 14,624 candidates shortlisted in CSE 2024 against 1,132 vacancies. The year-on-year decline in both vacancies and qualifiers reflects the reduction in cadre-level recruitment targets set by Cadre Controlling Authorities.

[11:15 AM | June 16, 2026] — LANDMARK DEVELOPMENT | UPSC releases provisional answer key for first time in history — four days after exam

In a historic departure from its decades-old practice, UPSC released the provisional answer key for CSE Prelims 2026 on May 28, 2026 — just four days after the examination was held on May 24.

Previously, UPSC released the answer key only after the declaration of the final result, which meant candidates had to wait approximately one year after sitting the Prelims before they could verify official answers. This change fundamentally alters how aspirants can engage with the examination outcome.

For the first time in any UPSC CSE cycle, candidates were able to estimate their own scores, cross-check answers against official keys, and identify potential errors within days of the exam — not months or years later.

One question — Question No. 64 from Set A of GS Paper I — was dropped in the provisional answer key. This means all candidates received full marks for that question regardless of their answer, effectively raising the total by 2 marks for every appeared candidate.

This change represents the most significant procedural reform in UPSC's result management in recent memory and sets a new standard of transparency for competitive examinations in India.

[11:00 AM | June 15, 2026] — IMPORTANT | UPSC marks release date: when will you see your score

This is the question every appeared candidate is asking. Here is the precise, factually accurate answer.

UPSC does not release individual marks after the Prelims result. It does not release marks after the Mains result. It does not release marks after the Personality Test.

Individual candidate marks — for every stage — are released within 15 days of the final CSE result declaration. The final result for CSE 2026 is expected in April–May 2027. That means all appeared candidates will be able to see their Prelims GS Paper I score, their CSAT score, their Mains paper-wise breakdown, and their Interview marks — all at once — approximately in April–May 2027.

This one-year wait is not an error or a delay. It is UPSC's official, longstanding policy, applied consistently across every examination cycle.

The marks portal on upsc.gov.in typically remains open for 30 to 60 days after upload. Once it closes, marks can only be obtained by filing an RTI under the Right to Information Act, 2005.

A total of 1,016 vacancies have been notified for CSE 2026 across 21 Group A and Group B Central Government services. Of these, 33 posts are reserved for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities, broken down as follows:

Blindness and low vision: 7 vacancies

[09:30 PM | June 15, 2026] — PROFILE | CSE 2025 AIR 1 Anuj Agnihotri — what his journey tells every aspirant

The CSE 2025 final result, declared earlier this year, placed Anuj Agnihotri at All India Rank 1 with a final total of 1,071 marks out of 2,025. His journey is one of the most instructive in recent UPSC history.

Agnihotri appeared in the Civil Services Examination three times. In his first successful attempt in the CSE 2023 cycle, he secured All India Rank 342. He returned for the CSE 2025 cycle — his third attempt overall — and topped the examination.

He chose Medical Science as his Mains optional subject — an uncommon but completely permissible choice for MBBS graduates.

The marks data from CSE 2025 reveals how decisive the Personality Test can be at the very top. Rajeshwari Suve M scored higher in the written examination with 865 marks compared to Agnihotri's 867, but a difference in Interview scores resulted in a final gap of four marks between them in the overall merit list. This demonstrates that at the top ranks, where written marks are separated by single digits, the Interview's 275-mark weight becomes the deciding factor.

[09:15 AM | June 15, 2026] — EXPLAINED | What happens after you qualify — from Mains to service allocation

Clearing Prelims is the entry point to a process that takes another 10 to 12 months to complete. Here is what follows.

Mains examination: Scheduled for August 21, 2026. Nine papers across five days. Seven papers count toward the merit score — Essay (250 marks), GS I (250), GS II (250), GS III (250), GS IV (250), Optional Paper I (250), Optional Paper II (250) — totalling 1,750 marks. Two language papers (one Indian language and English) are qualifying in nature and not counted in the merit total.

Mains result and Personality Test shortlist: Expected December 2026–January 2027. Approximately 2,500 to 3,000 candidates shortlisted for Interview.

Personality Test: Conducted by UPSC board panels, expected January–February 2027. Carries 275 marks. The board assesses mental alertness, critical powers of assimilation, clear and logical exposition, balance of judgement, variety and depth of interest, and social cohesion. No specific subject knowledge is tested — only personality and suitability for civil services.

Final result: Expected April–May 2027. A consolidated merit list across all categories published on upsc.gov.in.

Service allocation: Determined by rank, category, vacancy availability in each service, and DAF preference order. IAS, IPS, and IFS typically require the highest ranks. Candidates at lower ranks are allocated Group A and Group B Central Services including IRS, IAAS, and others.

Training: IAS officers go to LBSNAA, Mussoorie for the Foundation Course. IPS officers train at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, Hyderabad. IFS officers train at the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service, New Delhi. Training begins after cadre allocation.

Reserve list: UPSC maintains a consolidated reserve list after every cycle as a backup for vacancies arising from candidates declining appointment, medical ineligibility, or court orders. In the CSE 2024 cycle the reserve list comprised 230 candidates across categories.

Syllabus areas: Current events of national and international importance, Indian history and the Indian National Movement, Indian and world geography (physical, social, economic), Indian polity and governance (Constitution, political system, panchayati raj, public policy, rights issues), economic and social development (sustainable development, poverty, inclusion, demographics, social sector initiatives), general issues on environmental ecology, biodiversity and climate change, and general science.

No individual subject within GS Paper I carries a separate weight. The cutoff is a single aggregate score from the full paper.

CSAT Paper II:
Total questions: 80
Total marks: 200
Duration: 2 hours
Marks per correct answer: 2.5
Negative marking: 0.833 marks per wrong answer

[08:45 AM | June 15, 2026] — DATA | Year-on-year comparison — registrations, qualifiers, vacancies

CSE 2024: Exam held June 16, 2024. Result declared July 1, 2024. Vacancies: 1,132. Mains qualifiers: 14,624.

CSE 2025: Exam held May 25, 2025. Result declared June 11, 2025. Vacancies: 1,087. Mains qualifiers: 14,161.

CSE 2026: Exam held May 24, 2026. Result declared June 15, 2026. Vacancies: 1,016. Mains qualifiers: 13,343.

The consistent decline in both vacancies and Mains qualifiers over three consecutive cycles reflects a tightening of recruitment targets at the Cadre Controlling Authority level — not a change in examination standards or difficulty.

Attendance pattern CSE 2026: 8,19,372 registered. Approximately 5,49,000 appeared. Approximately 2,70,000 did not appear. Attendance rate: approximately 67 percent. This is consistent with historical UPSC attendance trends. The gap between registrations and appearances is partly explained by the low application fee — Rs 100 for General category male candidates — which enables speculative registrations without significant financial commitment.

[08:30 AM | June 15, 2026] — EXPLAINED | Why 97 to 98 percent of appeared candidates do not qualify Prelims

With approximately 5,49,000 candidates appearing and 13,343 qualifying for Mains, the Prelims elimination rate in CSE 2026 is approximately 97.6 percent. This figure is not a measure of examination difficulty in isolation. It reflects the structural reality of an examination designed to fill approximately 1,016 posts from a national applicant pool.

The ratio of Mains qualifiers to vacancies is typically maintained at approximately 12 to 13 candidates per vacancy, giving each Mains candidate a 1-in-12 to 1-in-13 chance of final selection. This ratio is set by UPSC and has remained broadly consistent across cycles.

The GS Paper I cutoff — which determines who clears Prelims — is not pre-set. It is determined after the exam based on the performance distribution of all appeared candidates and the number of candidates UPSC needs to qualify (approximately 12 to 13 times the vacancy count).
