Class 10 English Words and Expressions 2 Reported Speech FAQs

What is reported speech?

Reported speech is used to report what someone has said. It is of two types: direct speech (exact words) and indirect speech (reported form).

What is the difference between direct and indirect speech?

Direct speech uses the speaker’s exact words in quotation marks. Indirect speech reports the message without quotation marks and often changes tense.

What happens to tense in reported speech?

When the reporting verb is in the past, the tense usually shifts back. Example: “is” becomes “was,” “have” becomes “had.”

When does the tense not change?

Tense does not change if the statement expresses a universal truth or if the reporting verb is in the present. Example: The teacher said that the sun rises in the east.
