Indian Navy Day 2025: Celebrating Naval Bravery

The Indian Navy Day takes place on the 4th of December each year to remember the efforts and the key role of the Indian Navy in the operation Trident when fighting the war between India and Pakistan in 1971. This is an important event at teaching the Indian citizens the importance of this victory. The role played by the Navy in the war could not be overlooked. In honor of the successful attack and as a tribute to all the naval officers who lost their lives, this event is celebrated all over the country.

Indian Navy Day: Historical Context and Significance

During the Indo-Pak War in 1971, Pakistan launched an attack on December 3 on Indian air bases. In response, the Indian Navy planned an attack on the night of December 4 & 5. Operation Trident targeted the Pakistan Naval Headquarters of Karachi, involving three missile boats – INS Veer, INS Nipat, INS Nirghat, and Vidyut-class boats. They sank three Pakistani Navy ships, including PNS Khaibar, killing hundreds of Pakistani Navy personnel. This attack, led by Commodore Kasargod Pattana Shetty Gopal Rao, is nationally commemorated.
