Boost Your ACCA Career with These Tips

ACCA mitigating circumstances allow students to report illness, personal emergencies, or other serious issues that affected their exam performance. Knowing the process can help you submit your request correctly and on time.

Here you will learn how to apply through MyACCA, what evidence you may need, important deadlines, illness-related rules, appeals, and how mitigating circumstances can affect your ACCA exam result.

What Are ACCA Mitigating Circumstances?

Sometimes life gets in the way of exam day. Maybe you were sick, or something sad happened at home. ACCA mitigating circumstances is the official process that lets you tell ACCA about problems that affected your exam performance.

It is not a way to skip an exam — it's a way to explain what happened during it. ACCA reviews every application fairly and follows a set process, so it's helpful to understand how the whole system works before you rely on it.

How to Submit Mitigating Circumstances to ACCA

Knowing how to submit mitigating circumstances that ACCA students often ask about is simpler than it sounds. You do it through your MyACCA account, not by email or phone.

Here is the step-by-step application process:

  1. Log in to your MyACCA portal.

  2. Go to the Help section and open the knowledge base.

  3. Select I'm a student → Exams → Exam experience → Circumstances affecting exam.

  4. Open the Qualification progress menu, scroll to Exam support, and choose Mitigating circumstances.

  5. Fill in the form. Pick your exam format and the exact exam session you are referring to.

  6. Write a short description of what happened (limit: 1,000 characters).

  7. Choose a category from the dropdown — there are 14 categories, including illness, bereavement, and technical issues.

  8. Upload your supporting document (PDF, JPEG, or Word file, max 2MB).

  9. Click Submit and save your confirmation message.

This link only opens on the first day of your exam, so you cannot apply before that.

ACCA Mitigating Circumstances Deadline

This deadline is strict, and ACCA will not accept late requests under any condition. Every exam session has its own closing date, and you can check the exact date on ACCA's "Important Dates" page.

A few points students often miss:

  • All evidence must be submitted by the same closing date — nothing extra is accepted after it.

  • You cannot ask for mitigating circumstances after exam results are already published; it must happen before the deadline linked to that session.

  • If you missed your exam entirely, this process does not apply. Fees are non-refundable, and mitigating circumstances is only for students who attended and were affected during the exam.

Because there's no flexibility here, mark this date the same day you get your exam admission docket.

ACCA Mitigating Circumstances for Illness

ACCA exam illness is one of the most common reasons students apply. Illness claims are accepted when a student falls seriously ill just before or during the exam sitting.

Under the ACCA exam illness policy, illness can include your own sudden sickness or the need to care for a close family member who is seriously unwell. In both cases, ACCA mitigating circumstances for illness must be reported through the same MyACCA form, using the illness or "ill health" category from the dropdown list, within the deadline window.

Evidence You Need to Submit

Proof matters more than the explanation itself. Without it, your case is much weaker.

Type of Evidence

Example

Medical proof

Doctor's letter or official medical certificate

Incident proof

Police or incident report

Technical proof

ACCA reviews internal exam-system logs automatically

Translated documents

Certified English translation, plus the original copy

Documents must be in English or officially translated by a licensed translator. Upload everything directly on MyACCA — don't send it by email.

Do Mitigating Circumstances Give Extra Marks?

Many students hope this process brings a shortcut to extra marks. The honest answer is no. ACCA does not add bonus points just because a form was submitted.

Instead, trained reviewers look at your specific situation and decide whether your case genuinely affected your performance. The outcome may lead to special consideration in how your paper is reviewed, but it is never a guaranteed mark boost. This is why strong, honest evidence is so important - it's the only thing that actually influences the outcome.

ACCA Mitigating Circumstances Appeal Process

If you're unhappy with how your case was handled, you can raise an appeal with the Examinations Appeals Committee.

Here's how the appeal step works:

  • Contact ACCA through MyACCA once your exam result is out.

  • Pay the appeal fee of £30.

  • Wait for an acknowledgement email confirming your appeal and the expected outcome date.

  • The Appeals Committee meets once per session, so late appeals are not accepted.

Keep in mind: an appeal only checks whether ACCA followed its own process correctly. It does not re-examine your original circumstances, and no new documents can be added at this stage.

Can Mitigating Circumstances Affect Your ACCA Results?

Yes, indirectly. ACCA mitigating circumstances results are not changed instantly, but if your claim is accepted, it can influence how your paper is reviewed by examiners. This is different from a guaranteed pass or extra score - it simply means your situation was fairly considered before your final result was confirmed.
