The SBI Clerk Recruitment Selection Process consists of the online Preliminary and Main examinations followed by the specified local language test.
Importantly, Prelims marks are not added to the final merit list. The final merit is prepared based on the aggregate marks obtained in the Main Examination, subject to eligibility verification and the applicable local language test.
The merit list will be prepared State-wise and category-wise.
SBI will also maintain a wait list of up to 50% of vacancies, State/category-wise. The wait list will remain valid for one year from the declaration of the final result.
The SBI Clerk 2026 Syllabus and exam pattern are covered through the Preliminary and Main examinations.
The selection process consists of:
Preliminary Examination
Main Examination
Local Language Proficiency Test, wherever applicable
The Preliminary Examination is an online objective test of 100 marks with a duration of one hour.
| Section | Questions | Marks | Time |
| English Language | 30 | 30 | 20 minutes |
| Numerical Ability | 35 | 35 | 20 minutes |
| Reasoning Ability | 35 | 35 | 20 minutes |
| Total | 100 | 100 | 60 minutes |
Each section has separate timing. There is 1/4th negative marking for every wrong answer. SBI has not prescribed minimum qualifying marks for individual sections or the aggregate in Prelims. Approximately 10 times the number of vacancies, subject to availability, will be shortlisted for Mains.
The Main Examination consists of 190 questions for 200 marks with a total duration of 2 hours 40 minutes.
| Section | Questions | Marks | Time |
| General/Financial Awareness | 50 | 50 | 35 minutes |
| General English | 40 | 40 | 35 minutes |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 50 | 50 | 45 minutes |
| Reasoning Ability & Computer Aptitude | 50 | 60 | 45 minutes |
| Total | 190 | 200 | 2 hours 40 minutes |
There is 1/4th negative marking for wrong answers. SBI will decide the minimum aggregate qualifying marks. No minimum qualifying marks are prescribed for individual subjects.
Eligible trained SBI apprentices will receive 5 bonus marks out of 200 in the Main Examination.
This benefit is equivalent to 2.5% of the maximum marks and is available subject to the conditions mentioned in the notification, including successful completion of the specified one-year SBI branch experience and apprenticeship requirements.
Selected Junior Associates will remain on probation for a minimum of six months. During probation, newly recruited employees must complete the e-lessons prescribed by SBI.
The probation period may be extended if the required e-lessons are not completed or if the employee's performance does not meet the Bank's expectations.
Another important point candidates should consider before selecting a State is the transfer rule.
Candidates can apply for only one State/UT, and selected candidates will be posted in the State for which they applied.
There is no provision for Inter-Circle or Inter-State Transfer before completion of five years of service. After five years, transfer requests may be considered only in exceptional cases such as extreme compassionate or spouse grounds, at SBI's discretion and according to the applicable transfer policy.
Therefore, candidates should select their State carefully rather than applying solely on the basis of the number of vacancies.
SBI will arrange online Pre-Examination Training for eligible SC/ST/OBC, Ex-Servicemen and PwBD candidates as per Government of India guidelines.
Candidates interested in this facility need to select the relevant option while filling out the application form. Training schedule details will be communicated through registered email and SMS.
The SBI Clerk pay scale is:
₹24,050-1,340/3-₹28,070-1,650/3-₹33,020-2,000/4-₹41,020-2,340/7-₹57,400-4,400/1-₹61,800-2,680/1-₹64,480.
The starting Basic Pay for a graduate Junior Associate is ₹26,730, including two advance increments.
The total starting emoluments for a Clerical Cadre employee posted in a metro such as Mumbai are around ₹46,000 per month, including DA, applicable allowances and the two additional increments.
Other benefits include provident fund, pension under the New Pension Scheme, medical facilities, leave-fare benefits and other facilities according to SBI rules.
