SBI PO Backlog Vacancy 2026

Of the 1500 total vacancies, 54 are backlog vacancies. Backlog vacancies are positions that were reserved for a particular category in a previous recruitment cycle but could not be filled due to non-availability of suitable candidates. They carry forward into the current cycle and are filled alongside regular vacancies.

Backlog vacancy distribution

  • SC Backlog: 18 vacancies

  • ST Backlog: 36 vacancies

  • OBC, EWS, UR: No backlog vacancies in 2026

  • PwBD Backlog: HI – 1, d&e – 2 (total 3 horizontal backlog vacancies)

Important: Backlog vacancies reserved for PwBD will first be filled within the respective sub-category. If no suitable candidate is available, the vacancy will be adjusted among the four PwBD sub-categories (VI, HI, LD, d&e) at 1% each.

SBI PO 2026 State-Wise Vacancy

SBI has not released a state-wise vacancy breakdown in the official notification (Advertisement No. CRPD/PO/2026-27/09). The notification states that selected candidates may be posted anywhere in India. SBI typically communicates posting preferences and regional allocation at the time of the interview stage.

What is known from the official notification:

  • Exam centres span 35 states and UTs across India — see the examination centre list in Annexure-I of the notification.

  • All Preliminary Exam centres double as Pre-Examination Training centres for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD candidates.

  • The main exam will be conducted at a limited set of centres within each state.

  • The Bank reserves the right to allot any centre or posting location as per operational requirements.

This section will be updated if SBI releases a formal state-wise vacancy distribution. Candidates are advised to check the official SBI careers portal at bank.sbi/web/careers/current-openings for updates.

Key observations from the year-wise data

  • 2026: 1500 vacancies — the highest since 2023, and nearly 3x the 2025 figure of 541

  • 2025: Only 541 vacancies — the lowest in the past seven years, making it the most competitive cycle

  • 2023 and 2021: Both saw 2000+ vacancies, reflecting peak recruitment phases

  • 2024: A sharp drop to 600 vacancies indicated SBI's selective hiring approach

  • 2022: 1,673 vacancies — a moderate year, between the 2021 peak and 2024 low

  • 2020: 2,000 vacancies — the baseline from which recent fluctuations can be measured

What the 2026 vacancy surge means for candidates

The jump from 541 (2025) to 1500 (2026) vacancies is significant. More vacancies generally mean lower cutoff scores and better selection chances across all categories. For reserved category candidates, the increase in SC/ST/OBC/EWS seats is proportional to the total increase, improving absolute opportunities. However, the higher vacancy count also attracts more applicants — candidates should expect strong competition and prepare accordingly.

SBI PO Vacancy 2025 (Previous Year – For Reference)

For comparison, here is the 2025 SBI PO vacancy breakdown. The 2025 cycle had only 541 total posts — 500 regular and 41 backlog — making it the most selective cycle in recent history.
