World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD), celebrated every year on 17 May, celebrates the establishment of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) - the digital technology agency of the United Nations.

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day History
World Telecommunication Day was first established in 1973 by Resolution 46 of the Plenipotentiary Conference held in Malaga-Torremolinos, Spain. It has been celebrated every year since 1969 on May 17 to commemorate the founding of the ITU and the signing of the first international telecommunications treaty in1865.
In 2005, at the Summit of the Information Society, the UN General Assembly was called to declare May 17 as the World Day of the Information Society to emphasize the importance of information and technology to society. In March 2006, the General Assembly adopted a resolution (A/RES/60/252) declaring May 17 World Information Society Day.
In 2006, the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Antalya, Turkey agreed to combine the two events in the World Day of Telecommunications and Information Society. According to Un.org, the updated resolution 68 calls on member states and industry members to celebrate the day annually by organizing appropriate national programs.
