CA Exam Exemption FAQs: ICAI Guidelines for Exemption in Papers

ICAI grants paper-wise exemptions to candidates who score 60 or more marks in an individual paper but do not clear the overall group. The exemption is automatically carried forward and remains valid for the next three consecutive examinations, helping students focus on the remaining papers.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) allows candidates to claim paper-wise exemptions when they score exceptionally well in an individual subject but are unable to clear the entire group.

This provision helps students retain their high scores and focus on the remaining papers in subsequent attempts. Understanding the ICAI exemption rules, eligibility criteria, validity period, and carry-forward provisions is essential for planning future CA exam attempts effectively.

What Is an Exemption in CA Exams?

An exemption allows a candidate to skip a particular paper in subsequent attempts after securing 60 marks or more in that paper while failing the overall group. This means students can focus only on the remaining subjects instead of reappearing for all papers. The marks of the exempted paper are carried forward according to ICAI rules.

ICAI Exemption Eligibility Criteria

To become eligible for an exemption, candidates must satisfy certain conditions. These rules apply to CA Intermediate and CA Final examinations.

Conditions for Availing an Exemption

  • The candidate must appear in all papers of the group or unit.

  • The candidate should fail to clear the group as a whole.

  • At least 60 marks must be secured in one paper.

  • The exemption is granted only for that specific paper.

If these conditions are fulfilled, ICAI automatically grants the exemption.

ICAI CA Exam Exemption Rules

ICAI has laid down specific rules regarding the validity and use of exemptions. Understanding these rules helps students avoid confusion during future attempts.

For example, an exemption earned in November 2026 will remain valid for the next three examinations only. The exemption remains valid for the next three consecutive examination sessions, regardless of whether the candidate appears in them.

How Long Is a CA Exam Exemption Valid?

Exemptions are not permanent. They have a limited validity period. An exemption remains valid for:

  • First succeeding examination.

  • Second succeeding examination.

  • Third succeeding examination.

After these three attempts, the exemption automatically expires.

If the candidate does not clear the group within these attempts, the exemption lapses and the paper must be written again.

CA Exemption Carry Forward Rules

ICAI automatically carries forward eligible exemptions. Students are not required to submit a separate application.

However, while filling the examination form, candidates are advised to mention previously earned exemptions to facilitate verification.

Group-wise Exemption Rules in CA Exams

Exemptions are applied separately for each group. An exemption secured in Group I does not affect eligibility for obtaining an exemption in Group II.

Therefore, students can simultaneously hold:

  • An exemption in Group I.

  • Another exemption in Group II.

Since the two groups are treated independently, performance in one group does not influence the other.

Exemption Rules for Conversion Cases

Students converting from older schemes such as PE II or PCE to IPCE may receive paper-wise exemptions based on corresponding subjects.

Important Points Students Should Remember

Understanding exemption rules is only useful when you also remember the practical details that affect your future attempts. A few key guidelines can help you avoid losing exemptions and plan your preparation more effectively. Keeping these points in mind can make managing your CA exam journey much easier.

Before relying on exemptions, candidates should keep the following points in mind:

  • Exemptions are available only if all papers of the group are attempted.

  • The validity period is limited to three consecutive examinations.

  • Missing an attempt does not extend the validity.

  • A subsisting exemption in a group prevents another exemption in the same group.

  • Exemptions are automatically carried forward.

  • Exemptions are group-specific and do not affect the other group.

Understanding these provisions helps students plan their preparation more strategically.

Why Are CA Exam Exemption Rules Important?

Understanding CA exam exemption rules helps students plan their preparation more effectively and reduce the burden of reappearing for all papers. These guidelines ensure that strong performance in individual subjects is not wasted. Knowing the rules also helps candidates make better use of their attempts and improve their chances of clearing the remaining papers.

Knowledge of ICAI exemption guidelines enables students to:

  • Reduce the burden of reappearing for all papers.

  • Focus more on weaker subjects.

  • Utilise attempts more efficiently.

  • Plan their study schedule strategically.

  • Improve the chances of clearing groups in subsequent attempts.

For CA aspirants, understanding exemption rules is as important as understanding the syllabus itself.

The ICAI exemption policy allows candidates to preserve strong performance in individual papers while focusing on the remaining subjects in future attempts.

Since exemptions remain valid for only the next three consecutive examinations, students should plan their preparation strategically to make the best use of this benefit. Always refer to the latest ICAI notifications, as examination regulations may be updated from time to time.
