CA Final Permanent Exemption 2026: Continue Exhausted Exemptions & ICAI Guidelines

Understanding the latest ICAI guidelines is important because this is a one-time opportunity. Missing the application deadline means the exemption will lapse permanently.

ICAI Group Exemption Rules

Candidates having exemptions in two papers of the same group must exercise the option carefully.

According to ICAI:

  • Both exemptions must be converted into Permanent Exemptions together, or

  • Both exemptions must be allowed to lapse.

Candidates cannot retain one exemption while surrendering another paper in the same group.

Mark Calculation for Permanent Exemption

Students opting for a Permanent Exemption should understand how marks will be considered.

  • Marks in the exempted paper will be fixed at 50 marks.

  • Any marks originally scored above 50 will not be considered.

  • Additional marks above 50 will not contribute towards the 50% aggregate requirement of the same group or another group.

ICAI Rules for Permanent Exemption

ICAI has prescribed specific rules that candidates must follow after opting for Permanent Exemption.

Passing Remaining Papers : Once a paper receives Permanent Exemption, candidates must pass all the remaining papers of that group.

For every remaining paper, they must secure at least 50% marks.

Can You Surrender a Permanent Exemption?

Yes, ICAI allows candidates to surrender a permanently exempted paper and appear for that paper again in future examinations if they wish to improve their performance.
