CA Intermediate Passing Marks and Exemption Rules Explained: Whether you are preparing for a single group or aiming to clear both groups together, here is a comprehensive, student-friendly guide explaining the passing parameters and the concept of permanent exemptions.
The ICAI allows candidates to clear CA Intermediate in two ways: either by passing both groups simultaneously in a single sitting, or by clearing individual groups across different attempts.
The baseline requirement relies on two main thresholds: the minimum individual subject passing marks and the minimum group aggregate.

CA Intermediate Passing Criteria Explained |

|
Passing Model |
Minimum Marks Per Subject Paper |
Aggregate Criteria Requirement |
|
Passing an Individual Group |
Minimum 40% marks in each paper |
Minimum 50% marks in the overall aggregate of all papers within that specific group. |
|
Passing Both Groups Simultaneously (Sitting for all papers together) |
Minimum 40% marks in each paper across both groups |
Minimum 50% marks in the aggregate of all papers across both groups taken together (allowing a set-off advantage). |
What is the Set-Off Advantage? If you appear for both groups simultaneously and score exceptionally high in Group 1 but fall slightly short of the 50% aggregate in Group 2, your surplus marks from Group 1 can be clubbed to cover the deficit in Group 2—provided you have scored at least 40% in every individual subject.
If you appear for all papers within a specific group but unfortunately do not pass the entire group, your high scores are not entirely lost. ICAI provides a relief buffer known as an Exam Exemption.
If you secure a minimum of 60% marks in any specific paper or papers of a group, you are granted an exemption for that subject.
The Benefit: You do not need to reappear for that specific paper or papers in the immediately next three following consecutive examinations.
Revised Passing Criteria: To pass the group in those subsequent three attempts, you must secure a minimum of 40% marks in each remaining paper and a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate of all papers of the group (including the marks of your exempted paper).
What happens if your three standard attempts exhaust and you still haven't cleared the group? Under the official ICAI regulations, you can choose to convert your exhausted credit into a Permanent Exemption:
The Rule Shift: You can opt to extend the exemption of that paper into subsequent examinations indefinitely.
The New Passing Condition: Once you convert an item into a permanent exemption, the passing criteria for the remaining papers changes. You will be required to obtain a minimum of 50% marks in each of the remaining papers individually within that group to declare a pass.
You do not need to file physical applications to secure your fundamental exemptions. The ICAI handles validation parameters automatically:
1.Log In to the Self-Service Portal (SSP):Step 1.
Navigate to the official ICAI portal and log into your student account using your unique SRN credentials.
2.Verify Marksheet Indicators:Step 2.
Review your previous result sheets. Automatically granted standard exemptions are highlighted with a "#" symbol next to the score. Carried-forward valid exemptions show an "E" symbol.
3.Access the Permanent Exemption Window:Step 3.
If your standard 3-attempt cycle has exhausted, look for the designated active notification window on the dashboard before the upcoming exam cycles begin.
4.Submit the Continuation Option:Step 4.
Select the eligible paper you want to hold permanently, read the adjusted 50%-per-paper passing condition notice, and submit your confirmation.
