The story of Kolkata’s Dip Roy, who secured AIR 14 in the CA Foundation September 2025 examination, is a powerful reminder of how determination, resilience and family sacrifice can transform a student’s future. Growing up with limited resources, Dip balanced school, tuition teaching and self-study while navigating pressure, exhaustion and financial struggles. His parents stood behind him with everything they had. His father worked tirelessly across multiple jobs, and his mother sold all her jewellery to fund his education. Today, Dip’s achievement is not just a personal victory but an emotional triumph for his entire family and an inspiration for thousands of CA aspirants.
One of the most emotional moments in Dip’s story emerged when his father shared that Dip’s mother had sold all her jewellery to support his studies. She had nothing left but willingly invested everything she had in her son’s future. This sacrifice brought the entire hall to silence, followed by overwhelming applause. Her courage and love became the emotional backbone of Dip’s journey to success.
Dip shared that he came from a very poor family. To continue his education, he began teaching tuition from Class 11, guiding students from Classes 3, 5 and 6. He expressed deep gratitude to his school teachers and principal who supported him during fee delays and encouraged him through difficult times.
When he started preparing for CA Foundation, the syllabus felt vast and overwhelming. Managing studies alongside teaching 6 to 7 students daily left him with barely 3 hours in the morning and 1 to 2 hours at night. There were moments when he felt like giving up, wondering if CA was too difficult for someone in his circumstances. Yet, he kept pushing forward.
Dip revealed that he did not have a study room or even a study table. He initially studied on the bed, but the comfort made him sleepy, so he converted the family dining table into a study space. He covered it with cloth, decorated it with plastic flowers for positivity and used sofa covers to make his plastic chair more comfortable.
For classes, he used a dictionary as a phone stand and attended lectures on an old mobile phone. It was only after scoring 98 percent in Class 12 that he received a new phone as a school prize. Dip’s setup became a lesson for many students watching: you do not need fancy gadgets to succeed; you only need determination.
Dip’s father shared his own emotional journey when asked about his work. He had spent years working in a factory that produced ready-made garlands, handling cutting and sampling tasks. Alongside this, he had spent 25 years singing at events across Bombay, Surat and Bengal. Despite his efforts and talent, he was never able to build a stable career.
He said that although luck had not favoured him, he wanted his son to achieve something meaningful, something the world would recognise. Dip’s outstanding academic record, including 98 percent in Class 12 and AIR 10 at the national level, reinforced his father’s belief that investing in his son’s education was the right choice.
Dip Roy’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that success does not require expensive devices, a perfect study environment or ideal circumstances. What truly matters is consistency, courage and the willingness to keep going despite challenges. His parents gave everything they had to support his education, and Dip honoured their sacrifice by securing AIR 14. His story sends a clear message to every student who fears their dreams are limited by their circumstances. Conditions may be tough, but Dip’s journey proves that they can never stop someone who chooses to persevere.
