The CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) exam is a globally recognised professional qualification for careers in finance and investment. It is conducted by the CFA Institute and is divided into three levels: Level I, Level II, and Level III, which must be cleared in order.
CFA Level I focuses on basic finance concepts such as ethics, quantitative methods, economics, financial reporting, and investment tools. It mainly tests concept understanding and basic problem solving.
CFA Level II focuses on applying concepts to analyse financial data and value assets. Questions are case-based and test deeper analytical skills.
CFA Level III focuses on portfolio management and wealth planning, testing decision-making in real investment situations.
To appear for the CFA exam, candidates must have a bachelor’s degree, be in the final year of graduation, or have a suitable combination of education and work experience. A valid international passport is required, and the exam is conducted only in English.
All CFA exams are computer-based and held in multiple exam windows during the year, depending on the level. Candidates can choose their exam window and test centre during registration.
CFA helps candidates build careers in areas that involve financial analysis, investment decisions, and portfolio management. The qualification is valued in both Indian and international job markets.
After completing one or more CFA levels, candidates can work in roles such as:
Investment Analyst
Equity Research Analyst
Portfolio Manager
Risk Analyst
Wealth Management Advisor
These roles involve analysing financial data, evaluating investments, managing portfolios, and advising clients or institutions.
CFA professionals are hired by:
Banks and financial institutions
Asset management and mutual fund companies
Brokerage and investment firms
Financial consulting and advisory companies
Corporate finance departments
Many candidates start working after clearing Level I or Level II and continue higher levels along with their job. Completing all three levels and gaining relevant work experience helps professionals move into senior investment and management roles. Since CFA is recognised globally, it also supports career opportunities outside India.
