Factors Affecting Respiration
Respiration of Class 7
Factors Affecting Respiration
- The external factors include temperature, CO2 concentration, O2 concentration, minerals and light.
- Temperature affects respiration largely by affecting the activity of enzymes. Activity of enzymes may be reduced/increased by temperature fluctuations, or even the enzymes may be destroyed at very high temperatures.
- Higher concentration of CO2 and the absence of O2 adversely affect the rate of respiration (except in anaerobic respiration).
- Light is generally believed to control respiration by raising the temperature of an organism. However, in several plants, light-induced respiration (photorespiration) has been found to occur.
- Certain minerals are required for the optimum functioning of enzymes. Deficiency of these may hamper respiration.
- The internal factors include kind and age of tissue, water content of the cell; as well as the amount and type of substrate available.
