Blood Clotting

Transportation in animals and plants of Class 7

Normally, as long as the blood stays within the blood vessels, it remains in the liquid form. However, when a person is injured or a blood vessel is cut, the cut bleeds  for a while and then changes into a thick jelly called the blood  clot.

The clot consists of a net work of protein fibres called fibrin. The fibrin  is an insoluble protein and the formed  elements of blood are trapped in the network of fibrin fibres. The process of jelly formation at the site of  blood loss from the body is called clotting or coagulation. Clotting of blood prevents further loss of blood and entry of pathogenic micro-organisms. It is, thus of clear survival value to the  concerned  individual. Blood clotting or coagulation involves a series of chemical reactions which culminate in the formation of fibrin threads.
