CFA Eligibility by Level

1. For Level I Enrollment:

Candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Be in the second year of a bachelor's degree program.

  • Be within 23 months of their final graduation month.

  • Have already completed a bachelor's degree (from any stream: Arts, Science, or Commerce).

  • Have accumulated 4,000 hours of professional work experience over a minimum period of 3 years.

2. For Level II Enrollment:

  • Must have successfully passed the Level I exam.

  • Must be in the final year of an undergraduate degree (or within 11 months of graduation), or have already completed the degree.

3. For Level III Enrollment:

  • Must have successfully passed the Level II exam.

  • Must have fully completed a bachelor's degree. Candidates still pursuing their undergraduate studies cannot enroll in Level III.

Attaining the CFA Charter

To be awarded the final CFA Charter and become a "Charterholder," a candidate must fulfill all of the following requirements:

  1. Pass all three levels of the CFA exams (Level I, II, and III).

  2. Complete 4,000 hours of relevant work experience in investment-related or decision-making roles.

  3. Obtain approval for membership from the CFA Institute.

Subjects in CFA Program

Prior knowledge from 11th, 12th, or graduation in subjects like Mathematics (Quant) and Accounting can be beneficial for the CFA program. The curriculum features 10 core subjects that are repeated across all three levels, though their topic weights change, ensuring that the foundation built in Level I is progressively applied and deepened in Levels II and III.

The 10 subjects are:

  1. Ethical & Professional Standards

  2. Quantitative Methods

  3. Economics

  4. Financial Statement Analysis

  5. Corporate Issuers

  6. Equity Investments

  7. Fixed Income

  8. Derivatives

  9. Alternative Investments

  10. Portfolio Management and Wealth Planning

Key Subject Weightage Changes:

  • Ethical & Professional Standards: Has a heavy weightage in Level I (15-20%), which decreases in Levels II and III.

  • Quantitative Methods: Is tested in Level I (6-9% weightage) and Level II, but it has zero weightage in Level III and is not tested.

CFA Course Fees and Registration (2026 Update)

The CFA course is globally recognized as the number one finance course, justifying its cost, which is higher than the Indian CA course.

  • Major 2026 Update: The one-time registration fee (previously ~$450 USD) has been completely waived. Candidates now only pay the enrollment fee for each exam level.

  • Fee Structure: Early registration for an exam window results in a lower fee than standard registration.

  • Level I Fee (Example): For early registration, the fee is approximately $1,140 USD, which is around ₹98,000 to ₹1,00,000. While the course requires a significant financial investment, it offers very good returns.

CFA Career Scope and Opportunities

The CFA qualification opens up extensive career opportunities. A significant advantage of the CFA program is its market value at each stage:

  • Candidates can find employment even after clearing Level I.

  • Job prospects and salary potential increase significantly upon clearing Level II and again upon becoming a full Charterholder. (Memory Tip: Remember the principle, "No Learning, No Earning; More Learning, More Earning," which emphasizes the value of continuous professional development.)

Common career fields for CFA professionals include:

  • Asset Management

  • Investment Banking

  • Corporate Finance

  • Risk Management & Compliance

  • Private Markets (e.g., Wealth Advisor, Venture Capital Analyst, Private Equity)
