Who Can Apply for CSIR NET?

Candidates who have completed a Master's degree or an equivalent qualification from a recognised university are eligible to apply. The minimum marks required are:

• 55% marks for General, Unreserved, and EWS candidates

• 50% marks for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD, and Third Gender candidates

The percentage requirement is calculated without rounding off.

Can Final-Year Students Apply?

Yes. Candidates whose Master's degree results are awaited can apply under the Result Awaited category.

However, they must complete their qualifying degree within the prescribed period after the declaration of the CSIR NET result and secure the required percentage of marks. Failing to meet these conditions may result in the cancellation of eligibility.

Are Four-Year Bachelor's Degree Holders Eligible?

Yes. Candidates with a four-year bachelor's degree are also eligible to apply, subject to the conditions specified in the official notification. 

A minimum of 75% marks or an equivalent grade is required. Candidates belonging to reserved categories are eligible for relaxation as per government norms.

Students currently studying in the final semester or final year of a four-year bachelor's programme can also apply provisionally.

CSIR NET Educational Qualification Subject-wise

The qualifying degree should be relevant to the subject chosen in CSIR NET.

• Life Sciences: Candidates should possess an M.Sc. or equivalent qualification in Life Sciences or a related field. B.Tech Biotechnology candidates are also eligible, subject to the prescribed marks requirement.

• Chemical Sciences: Candidates should have an M.Sc. in Chemical Sciences or a related discipline. B.Tech Chemical Engineering candidates can also apply.

• Earth Sciences: Candidates with postgraduate qualifications in Earth Sciences, Geology, Geophysics, Atmospheric Sciences, Ocean Sciences, or related subjects are eligible. Certain engineering graduates may also apply.

• Mathematical Sciences: Candidates should have an M.Sc. in Mathematics, Statistics, or a related discipline. Engineering graduates meeting the eligibility criteria can also apply.

• Physical Sciences: Candidates with an M.Sc. in Physical Sciences or related subjects are eligible. B.Tech graduates in relevant disciplines may also apply.

What is the Age Limit for CSIR NET?

The age limit depends on the purpose for which a candidate is applying.

• Junior Research Fellowship (JRF): For Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), the upper age limit is 30 years, subject to the relaxations specified in the official notification. 

• Assistant Professor Eligibility: There is no upper age limit for candidates applying for Assistant Professor eligibility.

• Admission to PhD: There is no upper age limit for candidates seeking admission to PhD programmes through CSIR NET.

Is Any Age Relaxation Available?

Yes. Age relaxation is available for eligible categories.

Third Gender candidates are also entitled to the same relaxations available to SC and ST candidates.

Is Indian Citizenship Required?

Yes. Only Indian citizens are eligible to apply for CSIR NET. Candidates must satisfy the nationality requirement prescribed in the official notification.

How Many Times Can a Candidate Attempt CSIR NET?

There is no limit on the number of attempts. Candidates can appear for the examination multiple times as long as they continue to satisfy the eligibility criteria. Since CSIR NET is conducted twice every year, candidates have multiple opportunities to improve their scores and achieve their academic or career goals.
