What Minimum Percentage Is Required for CSIR NET?

Many students preparing for CSIR NET often want to know what minimum percentage is required to become eligible for the exam and whether their current marks are enough to apply.

The minimum percentage required for CSIR NET mainly depends on your category. General, EWS, and OBC candidates usually need at least 55% marks, while SC, ST, PwD, and Third Gender candidates require 50% marks in their qualifying degree, such as MSc, BE/BTech, Integrated BS-MS, MBBS, or related science courses.

Understanding this eligibility criteria clearly is important before starting preparation or filling out the application form.

What Minimum Percentage Is Required for CSIR NET?

The minimum percentage required for CSIR NET depends on your category and qualifying degree:

  • General / EWS / OBC category: Minimum 55% marks

  • SC / ST / PwD / Third Gender category: Minimum 50% marks

These marks are required in your qualifying degree, such as:

  • MSc

  • Integrated BS-MS

  • BS-4 years

  • BE/BTech

  • BPharma

  • MBBS

  • Related science subjects

The percentage is calculated based on the rules of your university or institution.

Category-Wise Minimum Percentage Criteria for CSIR NET

The minimum percentage required for CSIR NET varies by category, so candidates should check their category-wise eligibility before completing the application form.

EWS

OBC-NCL

SC

ST

PwD

Third Gender

Note: If your university gives CGPA instead of percentage, it will be converted according to your university’s official conversion formula.

Can Final-Year MSc Students Apply for CSIR NET?

Yes, if you are in the final year of your qualifying degree, you can still apply for CSIR NET.

However, you must complete your degree within the time limit mentioned in the official notification and secure the required percentage. If you fail to meet the eligibility conditions later, your candidature may be cancelled.

Is 55% Required in Every Semester?

No, you do not need 55% in every semester individually. The required percentage is usually calculated based on:

  • Final aggregate marks

  • Overall CGPA

  • Combined result of all semesters

So, even if one semester score is low, you can still become eligible if your final overall percentage meets the requirement.

What Happens If Your Percentage Is Slightly Lower?

If your marks are below the required eligibility percentage, you may not be eligible for CSIR NET. For example:

  • A General category candidate with 54% marks usually cannot apply.

  • An SC/ST/PwD candidate with 49% marks may also become ineligible.

That is why it is important to carefully check your final percentage before filling out the application form.

Does CSIR NET Have Minimum Qualifying Marks in the Exam?

Yes, apart from eligibility percentage, CSIR NET also has minimum qualifying marks in the actual exam.

  • General / EWS / OBC candidates need around 33%

  • SC / ST / PwD candidates need around 25%

However, qualifying marks can vary depending on:

  • Subject

  • Difficulty level

  • Number of candidates

  • Cutoff trends

Clearing the minimum qualifying marks does not guarantee selection because final cutoff scores are usually higher.
