  • X = 10

  • L = 50

  • C = 100

  • D = 500

  • M = 1000

How to Write a Roman Number?

The Roman letters or symbols are placed in a particular pattern, and based on their order, addition or subtraction rules are applied to arrive at the number. For example, when a letter indicating a smaller numeral is placed before a larger one, we must subtract the smaller one from the larger one.

Again, when a smaller value numeral is placed after a larger value symbol, you must add the values of numerals. The table below demonstrates this rule in detail with examples of Roman numerals and corresponding numbers in the decimal number system.

Steps to Convert MMXXX Roman Numerals in Numbers

The Roman numeral MMXXX represents a number; we must find the same. We apply a two-step process to do this, as mentioned below.

Breaking Down the Number Symbol-wise

We consider each digit of the given number individually to find their values. The Roman numeral MMXXX comprises digits X (3 times), and M (two times)

So, we find the values of these components separately as follows:

  • M = 1000

  • M = 1000

  • X = 10

  • X = 10

  • X = 10

Adding the Values of All Symbols

We use the addition rule for the same digits placed more than once. So, we add these symbols in the same order. It means we get:

M + M + X + X + X

= 1000 + 1000 + 10 + 10 + 10

= 2030

Therefore, MMXXX Roman number equals 2030 in the decimal numerical system.

Alternative Way to Convert MMXXX to Corresponding Number in a Decimal System

A simpler and quicker way to determine what Roman numerals mean is to check the Roman symbols from left to right. In the case of MMXXX Roman numerals, since there are two ‘M’s, you calculate it as 2 x 1000 =2000.

Again, there are three ‘X’s so that we can find the values as 3 x 10 = 30.

Now, adding the values, we get 2000 + 30 = 2030.

So, the value of MMXXX in numbers is 2030.

Rules to Write Roman Numerals

The logic behind the representation of numbers in Roman numerals is simple and systematic. Look into the rules mentioned below to interpret Roman numbers easily.

  • A symbol can appear a maximum of up to three times consecutively, and the values are added to get the corresponding value. For example, III = 1 + 1 + 1 = 3, XX = 10 + 10 =20, MM = 1000 + 1000 = 2000.

  • The symbols V, L, and D are never repeated. This is because VV= 10 = X, LL= 100 = C, and DD = 1000 = M.

  • Placing a Roman digit of a smaller value after a symbol of greater value means you must add the values. For example, X + V = 10 + 5 = 15.

  • Placing a symbol of a lower value before a digit having a higher value indicates that the values must be subtracted. For example: IX = X – I = 10 – 1 = 9.

  • Roman numerals are written from left to right, following the order that determines whether you need to add or subtract to get the number.

  • Only the symbol I is placed before the higher value alphabets V and X, and the symbol X is placed before symbols L, M, and C.

Roman numerals may seem puzzling at first glance, but there is a systematic and logical way of interpreting these numbers quickly and accurately.

With the explanation of the MMXXX Roman number, you can clearly understand how to determine other Roman numerals based on the provided rules.
