Eight former Indian Navy officers in Qatar Face Death Penalty: In a disappointing development for India, eight former Indian Navy officers, currently detained in Qatar on espionage charges, have been sentenced to death. This decision is a major setback for India to bring back the Indian Navy officers detained in Qatar. The court in Qatar delivered this shocking judgment on 26 October 2023.
The Qatar Court delivered a shocking decision, sentencing eight Indian Navy personnel to death. They had been arrested in August last year, accused of spying related to a submarine program on behalf of Israel. The Indian government considers this verdict as 'deeply' shocking.
Reacting to this disheartening order, India's Ministry of External Affairs has expressed deep shock. They have affirmed that they are of high importance to this case and are exploring all possible legal options to contest the judgment. The nature of the proceedings remains confidential.
These officers, who have had distinguished careers commanding major Indian warships, were employed by Dahra Global Technologies and Consultancy Services. This private firm provided training and related services to Qatar's armed forces. They were reportedly working on a sensitive project involving Italian technology-based midget submarines with stealth characteristics. Reports suggest that they have been accused of espionage.
These individuals have been jailed since August 2022. Despite repeated attempts to secure their release, their bail pleas were rejected, and their detention was extended by Qatari authorities. Now, The Court of First Instance of Qatar passed this judgment.
Meetu Bhargava, the sister of one of the detained officers, has reached out to the Indian government for support. She appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media, urging the immediate return of these officers to India, emphasizing their significance to the nation.
The Ministry of External Affairs has said in a formal statement on Thursday, “high importance” is given to this case and is exploring all legal options. “We have initial information that the Court of First Instance of Qatar has today passed a judgment in the case involving eight Indian employees of Al Dahra company,” it said. India places significant importance on this case and continues to provide consular and legal assistance to these individuals. They are also planning to raise the matter with Qatari authorities.
It further stated “We are deeply shocked by the verdict of the death penalty and are awaiting the detailed judgment. We are in touch with the family members and the legal team, and we are exploring all legal options,” it said. The MEA informed that it will continue to extend all consular and legal assistance to the Indians. “We attach high importance to this case and have been following it closely. We will continue to extend all consular and legal assistance. We will also take up the verdict with Qatari authorities,” it said in a statement.
