Eligibility Criteria to Become a JAG Officer After LLB

Candidates must satisfy all eligibility conditions before applying for the JAG Entry Scheme.

Educational Qualification

Applicants must have:

  • A 3-year LLB degree after graduation or a 5-year integrated LLB degree after Class 12.

  • At least 55% aggregate marks in the LLB degree.

  • A law degree from a college or university recognised by the Bar Council of India (BCI).

  • Eligibility to register as an advocate with the Bar Council of India or a State Bar Council.

  • A valid CLAT PG 2026 score, which is compulsory for all applicants, including candidates with an LLM degree.

Age Limit

For the JAG Entry 125 Course (April 2027), candidates must be:

  • 21 to 27 years of age as on 1 January 2027.

This means candidates should be born between 2 January 2000 and 1 January 2006, both dates included.

Nationality

A candidate should be:

  • A citizen of India, or

  • A subject of Nepal, or

  • A person of Indian origin who meets the conditions given by the Government of India.

Marital Status

Only unmarried male and unmarried female law graduates can apply for the JAG Entry Scheme.

Medical Fitness

Candidates need to meet the Indian Army’s medical standards.

Step-by-Step Selection Process for Indian Army JAG Entry

The JAG Entry selection process is designed to choose candidates with strong legal knowledge, leadership skills, and good personality traits.

Step 1: Official Notification

The Indian Army releases the JAG Entry notification on the official recruitment website.

For the 125th JAG Course, there are 10 combined vacancies for male and female candidates.

Step 2: Online Application

Candidates must submit the application only through the official Indian Army website.

During registration, candidates need to:

  • Complete the online form.

  • Enter personal and educational details.

  • Submit the application before the closing date.

Offline applications are not accepted.

Step 3: Shortlisting

After the application process ends, the Indian Army shortlists candidates.

The shortlisting is based mainly on:

  • CLAT PG 2026 score.

  • Number of vacancies.

  • Cut-off decided by the Army.

Only shortlisted candidates receive the SSB Interview call letter.

Step 4: SSB Interview

The Services Selection Board (SSB) Interview is the most important stage.

The interview is conducted over five days at Army Selection Centres.

The process includes:

  • Stage I Screening Test

  • Psychological Tests

  • Group Testing Officer (GTO) Tasks

  • Personal Interview

  • Conference

Candidates who fail Stage I are sent back on the first day. Those who clear all stages move to the medical examination.

Step 5: Medical Examination

Candidates recommended by the SSB must undergo a detailed medical examination.

The Army checks whether the candidate meets all medical standards required for service. Only medically fit candidates move to the final stage.

Step 6: Final Merit List

The final merit list is prepared based on:

  • SSB Interview performance.

  • Medical fitness.

  • Number of vacancies.

Only candidates who appear in the merit list receive the joining letter for the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai.

  • Graduation degree (for 3-year LLB candidates)

  • LLB degree or provisional degree

  • Certificate showing that the law college is recognised by the Bar Council of India

  • Bar Council registration or eligibility certificate

  • Identity proof and passport-size photographs

Salary of a JAG Officer in the Indian Army

After training, a JAG Officer joins the Army as a Lieutenant. The salary includes basic pay along with Military Service Pay (MSP) and other allowances.
